when you look at anime TV and Movies there is definitely a big difference.

On the movie side you have Princess Monoke, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, and Ninja Scroll while on the series side you have Bleach, Naruto, and Rurouni Kenshin (just some of my personal favorites).

I will have to say my favorite has got to be the series because there is so much to choose from and when you find a great one such as bleach you want it to go on forever.

What do you prefer? Movie or Series

I tend to prefer the series myself. I think that it allows more time for character and story development, though I generally like series that are limited to 26 episodes or less. That's not a hard and fast rule, as anyone who knows of my Hunter x Hunter love can tell you.

However, I still recognize the good poimnts about anime movies. The animation tends to be a bit better, for one thing.

I buy far more TV series than movies, mostly due to the character and plot development that others have stated. That's one reason. The other is that in the past, I was watching and buying DVD's from multiple shows at once. This, of course, left me with not very much to spend on movies, leaving me in a catch-as-catch-can scenario.

I also used to prefer series that ran around 13 episodes or so, until about last year. However, I'm still limiting what singles purchases I make to shows that only run season (except for FMA and Eureka seveN).

I personally prefer series, especially shorter ones (26 is the limit IMHO). However, I also think it's unfair to compare movies to TV series, as of course there will be differences in budget and, by extension, animation. That's why I'm a fan of Kyoto Animation, because somehow they can keep such amazing quality that rivals some movies in their TV series.

I prefer series. There are some anime movies I like and do a good job of telling a good story, but I think series, with more time, are better for telling most stories. Usually, a movie isn't long enough to develop a good plot and characters and get me to really care.

Now movies based on an exisisting series to finish off or add on to the story are another story since the characters and setting are already established.

I have to say that I prefer the TV series as well. You have a better chance to get to know the characters and their motivations a lot better than a 60 or 90 minute movie. Yeah, it takes longer to watch but in the long run it is more enjoyable and discussion worthy as well.

Anime movies are good but they really should be self-contained like Perfect Blue or be seen as an extra to the series (not integral to the main plot line) like the Sailor Moon movies were or a way to finalize the TV series like Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala

Here's the trick, though. When it comes to anime, it's next to impossible to find original feature films that don't require watching a TV series first in order to understand them. Outside of Miyazaki, Kon, Otome, and sometimes Oshii films, the vast majority of theatrical anime features are sequels to existing TV series, side stories to existing TV series, or digested, compressed retellings of existing TV series that are hard as hell to follow without having already seen the series. For every one Mononoke or Perfect Blue out there, we have two dozen Inu-Yasha 3, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conquerir of Shambalah, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, and You're Under Arrest: The Motion Picture.

Personally, I think it's only natural to have a preference for anime in series form, because in the vast majority of cases, the movies are just a part of the series, and pickings for original, stand-alone theatrical films (that remain coherent) are few and far between outside of the standard Miyazaki and Kon selections.

Standalone movies: I'm not a real big fan of. I've seen a few Miyazaki movies, and I like em....but other than that I'm not a big fan.

Movies that conclude a series or just go along with a series: I love them. I like a 90 minute wrap up better than a 25 minute wrap up...though the only 2 I've seen are the FMA movie and the Cowboy Bebop movie.

unless I'm mistaken, I beleive that the Cowboy Bebop movie was not an ending, but rather a side story that took place before the ending of the series.

As for myself, I pretty much agree with Nagisa.
I especially love very strongly story driven 12-26 episode series' because they feel like a very long movie (I.E. - Last Exile, Elfen Lied, and Samurai 7). I'm not very accepting of filler, so the 100+ episode series tend to get passed up by me.

True, but note that I said "or just go along with a series" in my original post Wink.

Also, yeah, I prefer 26 eps or less with my anime, cause I'm usually not a filler fan. Though there ARE some good long shows (FMA and Hunter x Hunter).

I do like Eureka 7 and watched Gundam Wing all the way through, but the 100+ episodes series' were the main thing I was referring to. I have sadly seen obvious filler in 13-26 episode series' as well Crying or Very sad

My initial casual observation is a variation of that made by Nagisa: It stands to figure that a theatrical anime work will be tied to an established TV anime series or successful game given the financial outlay and risks involved with such a project. Taking that factor into consideration then it isn't that surprising to see that the majority of anime movies are most likely made with the presumption the viewer has some working knowledge of the source material in the shape of a TV series. In my mind the two works which fit that model but don't are Miyazaki's "Castle of Cagliostro" and Oshii's "Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer". From what I've read, both of those films are unique and distinct enough that the orignal fanbase didn't embrace them as being part of the works they loved and enjoyed. In my personal experience I can think of a couple of examples of movies based on a manga which didn't have a consort or source TV anime series: "Toward the Terra" and "Barefoot Gen". (Coincidentally, both those films were made over twenty years ago.) Given that construct then it is not surprising to have most fans of a particular anime work state their preference for a TV series. Odds are that the success of the TV series is what led to the movie project being funded.

Having said all that I must confess that I'm a bit of a shameless consumer of anime who doesn't have an apparent preference for anime movies over TV series or vice versa. I'm not one who has much interest in TV anime series that have high episode counts and thus I'm typically not interested in the movies associated with those series (an example of an exception is "Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer"). I also see the movie versus TV series question as being one concerning an apples to oranges comparison. But, given the context put forward by the starting post of this thread, I'm going to put myself in the "Prefers movies" camp with the qualifier of "...and prefers short TV series". I suspect my preference for short anime series comes from not subscribing to cable TV. I'm not glued to a TV, I'm glued to a computer (at least when I'm not glued to a paddle or a set of weights). And the odds I'm going to purchase DVDs of a long run TV anime series is next to nil.

I would prefer series, because like mentioned above you get to know the characters more. Often times people will want to see the development of the character, whether it goes to the good side or the bad. Plus you get a whole lot more from the show rather than two hours from a movie. But not to say I don't like movies, Spirited Away to me proves that movies are very good also.

Since one of the main reasons I enjoy anime compared to real-life shows is the story telling and character development that you get (usually but not exclusively) through story arcs, TV shows are always going to be preferred over movies.

Aside from the story arc factor, I'm more likely to enjoy rewatching TV shows as opposed to movies. Not quite sure why this is, but it applies to all of my DVD collection.

Of course it helps that there are about 100-1 anime shows compared to movies in which to choose from.

Aside from Satoshi Kon's work & Studio Ghibli's output, I definately prefer series over movies, be it OAV or TV. I prefer series because (as others have already mentioned) the longer running time allows for greater character development, & a better understanding of the world created in the series. The world building seen in The Last Exile & The Twelve Kingdoms could not be achieved in a single movie IMO, & the epic feel & majesty of those worlds would have been lost.

Of course, there are types of series that I avoid like the plague & those are series that go on & on & on ad nauseum with no end in sight, e.g., Naruto & Innuyasha. I need my anime to end, otherwise I'll get really bored. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop
