So I just finished Volume 12 a couple of days ago and this manga is simply amazing.

The best part is that the stories between the anime and manga are actually different! I wonder is more people would read it if they knew so. I told a couple of my friends if they had read it, and they replied with: "Why? I've already seen the anime"

When I explained to them some differences, they decided to give it a shot and now keep asking me if I know when the next one will come out; the more resourceful ones got the scanalations.

Personally, I passed on the scanalations because I plan on continuing to purchase the US releases.

At first, the different story really bored me and the random events animated for the anime were more boring since I had already seen them, but then the action began and it's so intense.

I obviously don't wanna give anything away and want people to actually enjoy this manga for themselves. If you enjoyed the anime, check this out. if you enjoyed the first half of the anime and the whole gate thing felt really stupid to you, definately check this out.

I keep thinking I really should check this manga out. I love the anime, and since my hubby actually collects this manga we have it on the shelf... for some reason I just keep ignoring it.

I actually haven't seen the anime yet. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop But, when I found out the manga came first, I was tempted to read it. I usually prefer to check out the source material first. But, according to the encyclopedia, it's still ongoing in Japan. Should I start reading the manga or just watch the anime instead?

This is the feeling I had with Chobits. I read the manga first and then watched the Anime. I felt that the manga grasped the concept better, plus the ending was a little different and pushed at different emotions than the anime did.

So, Fullmetal Alchemist, eh? I'll give it a shot Smile I've been getting the manga but only read the first 2 volumes so far.

I also just got Volume 12 of the English releases and I just wanted to say that for all of you who seem to be interested that you should definitely check the manga out! Since I watched the anime first on Adult Swim, and heard that it was completely different from the manga (well the second half anyway), I thought I was going to have a hard time enjoying the manga because I loved the anime version so much. However, that is definitely not the case and am actually enjoying the manga even more, especially with the more recent volumes as the manga has surpassed the anime in storyline!

I just like to think of the anime as an "alternate retelling" or "alternate universe" or something like that Very Happy

I'd recommend watching the anime first. As a matter of preference, I don't normally like to read a manga before watching an anime because normally I'll get too focused on trying to remember if a particular event was in the manga, or if it was played out differently, etc. I'll end up losing focus of what is actually happening on screen. So, I watched the entire TV series and the movie, and then I started reading the manga. I'm enjoying seeing the differences between the manga and the anime (I've read 4 volumes so far). The best part is that I am hearing the English VAs from the anime in my head when I read the manga. It's pretty neat. Very Happy

EDIT: Spelling

Well, I've read the first 10 volumes anyways, seeing as how my Barnes & Noble doesn't seem to like to release certain volumes of certain series (grrrrr). I mean, they have up to volume 12, but have been missing volume 11 for some time now!! Mad

Anyways, I definitely have to say that it is probably better than the anime, as much as I absolutely loved the anime. It seems to me like there's much more to the manga then there is to the anime, like how the focus isn't just on Amestreis, but on the other countries in their world as well. I really like how similar it is to the Eurasian countries in our world.

Well, hopefully they'll get volume 11 in sometime very soon, I really would like to be up to date with it.

Thank you for your opinion. I'm usually pretty purist, but I have seen some anime before reading the manga and it helped me appreciate the manga series so much more. And since they seem to be different stories, it might not make a difference too much anyway. So thanks again! I'll watch the anime as soon as I have time.....Anime cry

Haha, I also hear the American voices when I read the manga. I kind of laugh when I realize that happens.

It seems it will take a long while before we catch up with the Japanese releases. I don't mind waiting 2 months in between releases, but will I be able to wait 4+ when/if it catches up? I'll have no choice Sad.

I got vol 1 when it first came out but then put off buying the other volumes. When I found out it is still going on in Japan though I found that interesting since the story must be different and then I heard something about the anime took an independent turn instead of going to filler so now that I know the story is different I want to buy more. Does anyone know what volume is that last one before the anime takes the independent turn?

Most fans say the manga splits off around volume 4 (spoiler[after Hughes dies]), but it's still pretty close to the anime until volume 8 or so.

Of course, if you wanna get nitpicky, the anime and manga split from the very first volume because the huge flashback arc doesn't take place until volume 6 in the manga, whereas they jump right into it in episode 3 of the anime. But usually volume 4 is the accepted split-off point.

Well, basically the entire manga series is different considering the fact that what takes place in the first 26 or so episodes happens WAY our of order in the manga. But I personally believe it to be about volume 8 where it stops following the same story the anime does. I'd still read the enitre series though, just because it really is that much different, and it does kind of set the tone for what happens latter on in a way the anime couldn't help you.

Thats cool I think I'll start buying more volumes. Are there any signs of it ending soon in Japan or is it still going strong?

Fullmetal Alchemist is probably my favourite manga of. all. time. I'm not fan-girlish about it or anything, and I know there are more famous classics out there, but I greatly respect the manga.

The only thing that annoyed me about the US releases was in volume 8, where they edited a picture of Greed. It seemed slightly immature, like saying that people can't deal with the fact that spoiler[one of the seven deadly sins was tied to a cross.]

As far as the other question, I believe that the manga is at a pretty climactic point right now, but don't know if it will end soon.

I think Arakawa-sensei said it would be running for another three years several months ago, so I'd say there's probably another year and a half to two years of FMA still to come.
