Well I don't know many people who watch anime but the ones that do all download fansubs. The reasons are pretty obvious - access to anime is not so easy and buying it from your mainstream entertainment stores can be very expensive. I will shamefully admit that I download far more anime than I buy. I've bought around 7 or 8 Box-sets which cost me around $140+ each, not because I particularly enjoyed the series or have a lot of money to spend, but because I felt the need to support Madman anime as much as possible. I still download a lot of anime but 90% unlicensed, if that makes it any better
.
So what about you? Do you mostly buy all your anime, order it from overseas, download it, watch it on live streaming sites, watch what there is on TV? |

You really should watch yourself here, it's a nasty subject.
But I will say this, if I can commercially receive a series I love at a reasonable price I will purchase it. That said, my collection doubled in November ;

I saw an article a while ago (can't remember how reliable the source was though) that said per capita Australians downloaded more shows through torrents than any other country studied.
Reasons given were the availability of broadband connection, delay in airing popular shows from overseas and higher DVD prices compared to R1. While the study applied to all shows in general, it's a similar experience with regard to anime. Personally speaking, I generally like to know what I'm buying before putting the money down, which could mean fansubs, renting or borrowing from a friend. Whatever way, if I like a show I'll buy it. |

Ironically I just found the following
http://www.yourtv.com.au/news/index.cfm?i=115013 Lets just say, they could have paid me a grant and I would have told em outright. The problems come when people start stating "we have lost this much money to piracy". I can't find the article but there is currently a ombudsman checking over claimed piracy figures in australia. would you believe that several major companies have been using data from a company that collects it from the UK? Among other things, current findings indicate that the companies have been over reacting to piracy and the effect it has on business. Bring on DRM free I say! |

However, i do buy Boxsets and anime dvds off ebay for a cheaper price. I also make sure i buy legit, Madman released dvds. In other words, I download new series' but i buy boxsets of anime i haven't seen before. -DaZ |

All my anime is official Madman-released product. I can't stand the thought of having pirated discs on my shelves, anime or not. I haen't bought any anime from the US at this stage, but I'm dubious about American product because the quality (of the releasing, packaging etc) seems to fluctuate enormously. I'm wary of spending my money on a boxset to find that it looks and feels cheap. I haven't felt that way about Madman's product yet.
I think the big thing in Australia is the delay in broadcasting. I have friends who download TV shows just to stay up to date, so I can understand why people do it. The other thing is the Region coding. What's up with that? Especially since its so easy to crack your DVD player for multiregion these days, do they really believe that region coding helps prevent people from importing US DVDs before Australian theatrical releases (which is why the Regions were introduced initially)? It causes delays for companies like Madman in licensing shows for Australian release, which forces fans to find other means of getting what they want. |

I NEVER buy anime without knowing if it will be worth the money. I think a lot of people are in the same boat and that's why they may download, stream fansubs etc.
I personally don't think the companies should be so adamant about getting people suspended on the likes of youtube. If people don't get to watch some of the show, how would they know if they would like to buy the merchandise? The truth is, not many people are rich enough to buy all the anime they want to watch. I think it becomes the company's loss when they do that because not only do their lose viewers (who are potential customers), they also lower their own popularity. I think at least a few beginning episodes should be allowed to be streamed online so people can get a taste of the particular anime. |

So what would happen if everyone downloaded their anime? A lot of people have put in hard work to bring us that product, it's up to us, as the consumer, to do our part. So Instead of approaching the situation as "I never buy anime" instead "Buy only the BEST anime". Use your dollars wisely and let the market know that you will not settle for substandard anime. And it doesn't matter if you think it' doesn't make a difference, cause it does. |

With The Larger Capacity of Blue ray and HD DVD will we be getting reissues of Anime on just one Disc at a reasonable price. For Example 36 Episode of Naruto on one disc, The entire Series of Cowboy bebop on one disc... and if this is the case will it delay the release of new material until there is enough to fill one disc due to translations etc... Will blue ray kill the Box Set?
if I could Get it all on one disc at a reasonable price [$2 -$3 an Episode] then I Definitely will Buy... |

Well I'd say there is no way in hell they would do that, but that's just my guess. I don't see how the companies would be able to survive if they didn't release multiple DVDs for a series.
You'll get much higher quality animation and sound, and probably a ton of features. But the actualy amount of anime on a single disc will stay the same. Oh and because Blu-Ray and HD DVDs cost more to make, you'll have to pay more for your anime, not less. |

How much can they improve animation thats all ready been done? Has there been any HD Animation?
Will we sea the Ability to download for a reasonable price? [Assuming broadband is broad enough... but that another kettle of fish.] I do See your Point companies need money why else would they release the definitive directors remixed uncut "pick a year" anniversary edition now with extra Chocolate sprinkles and a free puppy for the first 10 Buyers....but wait there's more... Reversible covers... A set of ginsu Knives... |

Well I can't be certain of all the facts, but some anime series have aired in Japan in HD. And you'd imagine that movies could be released in full HD too. I think so long as the have the original film, they would be capable of enhancing the resolution. But you'd best be checking over at AoD for information like this. |
