Have you ever had this experience where you buy an entire anime series as it is being released, and then you find out months later that there is a boxed set being released, cheaper than the overall price you paid for the DVDs individually and it comes with that awsome art box.
I'm glad that now series are being released with the first DVD and a box, but what about the other animes titles before that, animes like Gundam Wing or Neon Genesis Evangelion. I found the Evangelion box alone without the DVDs, but my Gundam Wing DVD collection is sitting on my anime shelf, boxless. Some series I have not bought yet (i.e. Steel Angel Kurumi) in hopes that there may be a boxed set released.
I don't know if it's just me, but I like having the complete anime series, including the box.

I never buy dvds as they come out. I know boxes will come and soon after the last disc. Thus, if I wait 6 months, I can save a huge amount. I never recommend disc by disc, it is always much more than a box could be. Especially for longer series and for thos in like 8 dvds. Most of those are $100 to $120 in a box, but end up around $200 for individual discs.

I agree. It can be a little frustrating when a box set comes out after you have collected a whole series disc by disc. That has happened to me on more than one occasion. Luckily for me, the anime shop that I go to will sell empty boxes. In fact, didn't Right Stuff sell empty boxes at one time?

What do you think about a series (say...Hellsing for instance) coming out with a "limited edition" box with a first volume, only to be sold as a full box set later on?

Yeah, finding out that something better is coming out, even cheaper, after you've shelled out your money is very annoying. But you know what is even more annoying? How about being introduced to anime late and then discover all the cool limited edition boxed set versions of you favourite anime that you missed out on?

Like FLCL, Cowboy Bebop and Giant Robo. Actually those limited edition boxed sets are annoying no matter how you look at it. For crying out loud, why only produce 10.000 units of something? I rather they didn't do it at all. There is nothing worst than knowing what you could have had, but didn't.

I try to wait for boxed sets as long as possible, I bought the first 2 and last one for Robotech, and the rest an single dvd's... couldn't find any in town, dodn't want to order online, so of course 2 weeks after I buy them, the store suddenly gets boxed versions Evil or Very Mad

anybody know if there is going to be a hellsing boxed set? I've been holding off for a while now, mostly because it's $45 a disc

There is already a boxed set for hellsing out and I own it I suggest you go to suncoast and search for it and if you find it then it will probably cost you $120-$140 for all 13 episodes! Wink

Where are you going that it is $45 a disc? It shouldn't be more than $30 tops. The Hellsing Boxset retails for $125. You should be able to find it for $110. Anything cheaper and it's either a bootleg or used.

In the past, I only bought box sets on series I was unsure of (i.e. Blue Gender, Gasaraki, and Nadesico). If I really liked a preview or advance review of a series (Recently: Rah Xephon, GTO), I did not mind minding buying the series by release dates, because I did not feel like waiting a few months (or in GTO's case almost 2 years) for the box set release.

...but in '04, this must change.
Due to the whole trying-to-save-every-penny I can budget, I will probably wait until two upsoming series I'm intrested in, Yukikaze and Kiddy Grade, are released in box sets (And in KG's case, maybe just settle for the edited version on AS, if that happens).

Lately, I have been thinking, why don't anime companies just release the box sets from the get-go?

Where's the money in that?

Luckily for me, right now anyway, a lot of what I want to see is older (i.e. Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, etc.) and the boxes for them are out there. But if a series catches my eye, I'll buy each disc. I hate shopping around or waiting, so I don't mind spending that extra 5 bucks a disc for the "right now" convenience.

Yukikaze and Kiddy Grade

Given that the Japanese releases of Yukikaze is one episode per year with the third coming out next year... That's going to be atleast a three-year wait, also we're not even sure if any of Bandai's Platinum edition is going to get box set treatment.

Kiddy grade will more than likely get end of series boxed set treatment. Which is good because kiddy grade is 8 DVDs * 6 weeks.

My suggestion then would be an online retailer.

Now that can't be right. Bandai has the US release of the DVD for February. And there release schedule is every 2 months.
Now that I think about it, isn't Yukikaze's run over in Japan? I thought I saw something about it Newtype.

Hell yeah, that's good. Although I'm still praying for an AS release.

BTW, kinda OT but, did CN get the rights for KG?
