Okay, I've been considering picking up Macross Plus on DVD, but I'm not sure what version to get. I've heard that the feature film version fixes a lot of things and improves on the original OVA, but then people said the same thing about Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku-Hen and I disagree with that.
Can anyone help me with this? Should I get the OVA or the feature film? Thanks in advance.

Personally I greatly prefer the OVA. The movie has one or two new/extended scenes that are worth watching, but it is missing several good scenes from the OVA, and the scene order is changed somewhat, which in my opinion has a serious negative impact on the quality of the movie.

So the movie actually has additional scenes that the OAVs don't? How strange... I'd just assumed they'd pulled a Polymatrix on it and condensed it from the original. I've never actually seen the movie version....
Being a purist in general, though, I'd say to get the OAVs....

Armitage III: Polymatrix had new scenes too.

Some say the director originally wanted to make a movie, but couldn't get enough financing. Anyway, both have their good and bad sides... The movie has a more dramaticly animated ending and a tighter, faster story, but has no dub, hardsubs and lacking video quality on the R1 release. The OVAs have more footage, a dub with a terrific lead performance (by the guy who plays Hal in Malcolm in the Middle), pretty good video quality, but a part of the ending feels akwarad due to poor animation.

I'd definitely go with the OVA. The movie's not bad, as said before, and does have ...2 character building scenes towards the end of it that I would have liked to have seen in the OVA, but there's so much missing from it-- all the guts that gave real life to the OVA. The shell is still there in teh movie, but not all the details I loved. And the truth is.... the plot really isn't why I watch this-- it's the music, character interaction, and action sequences. Thus, although the movie is more tightly paced, that wasn't what I was really looking for in the first place. The ending is sort of not an ending in either of the two versions really, although I guess there is a bit more of one in the movie.
Still, I'd go with the OVA, hands down.

I would pick the ova but if the other feature has added scenes that the ova dosen't have then I would pick that one.
Just my opinion.
