Age has really started to show for him, he should have just enjoyed retirement.

My art teacher used told me that artists never retire.

Your art teacher was talking about artist making paintings and such at their leisure, not one making a storyboard for a movie that will still need a ton of work after that while the studio keeps spending money.

Yes that is true, maybe it is just stubbornness.

Suzuki demurred from revealing the feature's title, saying, "I can't tell you."

A fanservice-heavy light novel adaptation. That is my bet.

Well, given his age, he shouldn't rush too hard anyway. It's a job that can kill you.

Given that the Oscars now accept animated films as being 'full-length' at around 40 minutes, I keep hoping someone at Ghibli will convince Miyazaki to aim for something more realistic in that range. It's not like it'd be the first pic he was associated with which was that short, either. Look at Panda! Go, Panda!

In all actuality, 'true' retirement is death. When you retire, you need to have something to replace work in your life. Sitting at home doing nothing, except the odd vacation will not cut it. That is the express train to death..

More power to Miyazaki, life is for the living.

Some people see retirement as a form of hell. And hey he might pull an Eastwood and keep working until he's near 90! It really wouldn't shock me.

Animation is a more strenuous thing for sure, but there have been countless examples of them who never retire. Osamu Tezuka famously died at work, Don Bluth is attempting a comeback at 79 and Ralph Bakshi came out of the shadows and made a new short a year and a half or so ago at almost 77, although they had long periods of inactivity that might've given them some rest. Chuck Jones was still directing in his 80s. Heck, Isao Takahata was older than Miyazaki now is when he finished The Tale of Princess Kaguya. That is a tendency with animators and directors of animated films.

Of course in Miyazaki's case health is a factor, and while unless it's affecting them we don't always know a lot about the health of filmmakers those guys aside from Tezuka are or might well have all been healthier. Another part is that Miyazaki insists on doing the storyboards all on his own. He may well finish his movie but unless they do something unusual like start animating scenes immediately after they're storyboarded 2019 is doubtful. If he accepted some help with the storyboarding like most western animated film directors do he probably could just get this done.
