Yep, saw this on blu-ray.com prior to ANN's article, and I can confirmed this: GKIDS/Shout Factory's BD release will have 2 English dub option: the 1998 dub done by Central Park Media, and the 2012 dub done by Sentai Filmworks. It'll also have the original Japanese voice of course. So GKIDS were cool enough (if not very smart) to put 2 English dubs in this BD release which the Sentai film 2012 release also had.
One question though: I was looking at Wikipedia entry for it and it looks like there was another English dub made for that movie when it was on Netflix that I wasn't aware of. How did that particular new dub fare compared to the 2 previous English voices? FYI: The 2025 Netflix English voice version is not on GKID/Shout Factory's BD release BTW. |

I'm so mad that the Netflix dub isn't included on this release, because IMHO, it's the best dub this movie ever got. The voice acting is much better, the scripting is less literal, and best of all, they actually bothered to have children play the two leads, with Setsuko's new VA being the absolute highlight of the dub!
Buying it. Yes, its disappointing the new Netflix dub isn't included, but I missed my chance to get the Sentai blu-ray when it was cheap, so I'm not gonna miss it this time! Also, thanks for highlighting my Reddit post there. Yeah, I was the one who started that thread. |

Sad the Netflix dub isn't included but it's nice to know the CPM extras that were missing from Sentai's Blu-ray are here.

OK, judging from both of your posts and from what I've read online, it sounds like the 2025 Netflix dub probably could be superior over the 2 previous dub. So I'm going to hold off buying this BD for now.
Wait, so that Reddit thread I linked on my OP, that's yours??!!!
Anyway, like I said I'm going to hold off buying both Grave of the Fireflies, and Arrietty until GKIDS are able to do this in a future re-releases:
That's what I want from GKIDS (assuming they're reading my post). Do that, and I'll gladly buy those BD with my specified wishlist I listed above. |

Ehh, I'd recommend buying the BD anyway because it was OOP for over a decade, and retains features from the old CPM DVD set, which the Sentai blu-ray didn't have. Plus, there's no telling if it'll fall out of print again. |

So this film has 3 dubs now. I didn't even know that the Netflix version had a new dub. Looking it up, it says it was the same company that dubbed Rebuild of Evangelion films.

I have the old Sentai Blu-ray, but I may double dip for the steelbook. Not only is the cover art great, it having the old special features from the CPM release is nice.

I can be forgiven for not wanting to see this, either subbed or dubbed. From what I've heard,it's really depressing and not really something I want to sit though, not even Netflix's version will make me want to see it. It's too grim for me. I doubt I'd be able to sit through it really.

Figured they would eventually. Now, more Takahata next? There are multiple works of his either OOP or never released here, and a few are movies!

Surprising GKids gets the whole Ghibli library now. I remember the big hangup in the past with Disney getting Grave of the Fireflies was that when Ghibli did their double feature of Grave and My Neighbor Totoro in 1988, they had separate publishing companies funding the development of each film with Grave done by Shinchosa and Totoro by Tokuma Shoten. The majority of the Ghibli film library is under Tokuma hence Disney able to license any Ghibli film developed under them.
At least based on what I read for the features of the GKids release, it looks like it retains a number of the features present from the old Central Park Media DVD release of the film such as the interviews with Roger Ebert and Isao Takahata, and feature-length storyboards. |

apparently, the reason why the netflix dub doesn't get licensed more often than not is because netflix overcharge publishers interested in their dubs. seems kinda dumb to me for netflix to gatekeep their dubs but hey, they seem to be making more money than ever with their current strategy so who am i to judge

Actually, there maybe people out there that want to have the Netflix dub included. One more thing: GKIDS was able to release Evangelion series and the film, End of Evangelion with the Netflix dub on there, so it shouldn't be that hard for a future re-release let say a 2nd press print version of Graves of the Fireflies could have a Netflix dub. I still want to see Arrietty re-release on BD in the US with the UK dub included if there was a chance. |
