Somehow I knew exactly who was writing this blurb as soon as I read that.

It seems to be an insanely stacked season. Counting all those I want to sample ends me up at 35 or so. Of particular interest to me returning series wise (excluding those in the article) are Grand Blue for more ''diving'', Vending Machine for more creative vending machine abilities and Arknights for closing off the first big arc.

New shows wise there is too much to mention really. The Water Magician and Silent Witch novels are fun reads so I am in for those. The real challenge is going to be dropping some of the lesser shows to not end up with a huge watching list. I suck at dropping shows so it is going to be fun.

Much as I like romance anime, My Dress-Up Darling just doesn’t land with me at all, and I don’t get it. It feels like the quintessence of the Magic Pixie Dream Girl trope, and yet somehow seems to get a pass from everyone on that. Am I missing something? Gojo’s also a mope of a romantic lead and his passion for doll-making, which seems like it ought to be elevated and revered if the point of the show is how all these creative pursuits are valid, constantly takes a third-row back seat to Marin’s antics. I’m happy for y’all who love this show that you’re getting more, but I just don’t get it.

Me, I’ve enjoyed the manga of yuri romantic comedy There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless…, and the animation in the trailers has looked sharp, so I’m hoping that one works out.

Porn. No really, they don't make porn with good budget and decent voice acting and there's an unmet need for it. People seek it, but can't directly ask for it because "Ewww you watch porn?!". So stuff like that and prison school get popular because they're close enough to porn without actually being considered porn, so people can watch and discuss it without having the eww factor.

I can only speak for myself here, but I find that it’s the refreshingly sex-positive take on fanservice. Marin, while very sexy and attractive, never really feels like she’s being ogled at, more like she’s happily inviting you to look, and the show doesn’t really veer into the humilation-fanservice that I see crop up in other rom-coms where the voyuerism is part of the appeal. Like, take the first episode: Marin wears her school uniform’s skirt fashionably short, so you can see her underwear when she walks. But the way the show frames it feels less “hee hee isn’t this naughty” and more incidentally “this is how short skirts work irl”. I’m sure I’m doing a piss-poor job of explaining it, but the vibes are just kinda different imo.

Just the sequels alone make this a pretty heavy season. Besides many already mentioned there's also Kaiju No. 8, Dr. Stone, and Sakamoto Days. And another season of Osomatsu-san, even when I still have to finish both season 2 and season 3. And well, there's also the 4th season of that dumpster fire that I really should have dropped long ago, you all know what show I'm talking about.....

Besides the sequels and a couple of shows already mentioned, some more shows that somwehat stand out:
  • Nyaight of the Living Cat - I mean, just that title....
  • Leviathan - Studio Orange....
  • Futari Solo Camp - now that Zatsu Tabi and Mono are over, I can only hope this will scratch the Yuru Camp itch...
  • Bullet/Bullet - cool title, cool poster
  • Hotel Inhumans - hotel with aliens is gone, now a hotel full of assassins...

Among sequels I'm looking forward to are Kaiju No. 8, My Dress-Up Darling, Reborn as a Vending Machine (especially curious to see where this one goes, since a new season should surpass the source material), Shield Hero, Call of the Night, and DAN DA DAN. (I'll probably also watch the second season of Reincarnated as a 7th Prince, but I'm hardly looking forward to it.)

I'm less certain about new titles, but one that seem at least mildly interesting include Secret of the Silent Witch, The Summer Hikaru Died, and There's No Freakin' Way I'll Be Your Lover! Unless. . .

For me, that's Panty & Stocking With Garter Belt. That title should be right up my alley, but for some reason it never clicked with me.

Someone explain to me why My Dress-Up Darling is different from any other ecchi harem rom-com with an otaku surrogate main character. In the first episode you have this gorgeous girl makes this grand speech to "mean high school girls" - because typical of the harem genre no other young males who might be romantic competition appear - justifying out of the mainstream hobbies that is tailor made to validate the otaku persecution complex. And guess what? This main character just happens to be an otaku also. In addition to being drop-dead gorgeous. At least Lucky Star gave us an explanation for why Konata Izumi played H-games for guys and had other male otaku hobbies, and Konata notably didn't have Marin's looks or personality.

And that leads into the most bizarre thing: we are supposed to believe that a teenage female who plays H-games doesn't understand why Gojo reacts the way that he does when she strips semi-nude in front of him - he actually has to prevent her from getting totally nude - and forces him to touch her body? (By the way, she repeatedly does this without his content and keeps doing so even after he has begged her to stop multiple times?) And she isn't a loner like Gojo. She has lots of female friends. Never had a single conversation with them on "hey that guy in history class was TOTALLY checking you out in that outfit"?

And just like Infinite Stratos and Rise of the Shield Hero were completely uninterested in the gender politics or social commentary - i.e. both were alleged matriarchies and the latter had slavery - and only used them as harem setup devices, My Dress-Up Darling is the same. Spends all of 5 seconds with "boy being shamed for traditionally feminine activities" (again, bullied by a girl and not guys plus makes no sense as most 6 year old girls would react to a boy her age liking dolls by gleefully inviting him to her tea party instead of shaming him) and then moves onto making it an otaku hobby stand-in and an excuse for the otaku surrogate to get to view and put his hands on Marin and several other gorgeous girls in various states of undress.

Yes, the show doesn't include a lot of tiresome harem stuff - no childhood friends, no cousins or sisters, no Ken Akamatsu violence (though Marin's punching Gojo for accidentally seeing and touching her a few times is clearly preferable to her repeatedly forcing him to view and touch her against his will), no competition among the haremettes etc. though there is the typical short tsundere that Rie Kugimiya might have played a few years back - but that isn't enough to explain why this show escapes the criticism that all the other ecchi otaku fantasies get. Gojo isn't even that far removed from the typical potato harem MC. He is tall and handsome, sure, but he has the same modern harem MC personality that you see all the time. The folks who praise this show need to be a bit kinder to other ecchi romcoms, especially ones where the main female isn't a repeat sexual harasser.

Such a stacked season! In addition to those mentioned, Witch Watch, Osumatsu-san, and Anne Shirley continuing are ones I'm very excited for.

I am also hoping Leviathan and Ruri Rocks turn out well!

I want to be excited about Call of the Night S2 (I count the first season among my favorite anime of the 2020s so far), but I'm skeptical of the direction the plot and tone might be going this season. I will drop it if it ends up turning into "Vampire Bleach" or some such.

I also want to be excited about CITY, but it got picked off by Prime, and I have better things to do with $45 than watch one anime.

I've read the first four volumes of There's No Freaking Way I'll Be Your Lover. It's a lot of fun, in a "hopeless normal girl being tormented by a quirky cast of equally hopeless lesbian suitors" sort of way. Maybe not for everyone, but if you have the right sense of humor for it you'll love it.

Speaking of yuri comedies, I haven't read the Bad Girl manga, but I understand it's quite polarizing among those who have. I'm at least looking forward to finding out for myself whether it's something I'd love or hate.

They are releasing a forth volume of the light novel at the start of July, so maybe they are basing the series off of that.
It wild that this series was canceled and has made a comeback.

...What even is this take?

But yeah, My Dress-Up Darling Season 2, all the way. That, plus Sakamoto Days Part 2, Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus and Takopi's Original Sin.

Nary a mention of The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity surprises me; if they nail the adaptation, it could be one of the best romances in the past 10 years.

Gotta watch Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt in dub; listening to them cuss each other in my native language made it so much better! Very Happy
