Is it just a general recognition award like the Order Of Australia or is there any particular meaning behind the award like a social ambassador or a knighthood?

Go Nagai was once labeled as an enemy of the state (by tabloids during Harenchi Gakuen scandal). Pretty ironic Anime smile.

Congratulations to both of them. It is interesting that Go Nagai was recognized before in France, as "chevalir of Order of Arts and Letters" (2019) than in his native Japan.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, his ecchi manga (the 1st ecchi manga ever created), Harenchi Gakuen caused national outrage in Japan back when it first came out.

And now they embrace the humor found in Harenchi Gakuen and it's a staple of manga and anime. Japan truly has come a long way. I'm so proud.

O_O This's the first time I heard about the "enemy of the state" thing. I knew the outrage was bad, but not that bad.

Maybe it was more like "Enemy of Society" or "Enemy of Nation" or something like that, but yeah, Harenchi Gakuen was pretty scandalous at time Anime smile.

Enemy of society/nation is more fitting since I read it that the manga did cause a national uproar back then.

Probably best to have a read of: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Rising_Sun

Previous award recipients familiar to ANN readers include Leiji Matsumoto and Joe Hisaishi.

It's what I like to call, the Chinatown Effect
