Without descending into hyperbole, this once again reaffirms my belief that when it comes to censorship, we must all be united in common cause, or censorship will target something we care about. There can be no splitting hairs or whataboutism, we must be united in common interests against those who would seek to police what we can and cannot look at.

I foresee an increase in VPN sales from that region to get around said ban, classic 'cat and mouse' game that occurs under a totalitarian government and their censorship policies.

So you can't even just see info on them now? That's too far?

I'm not completely against all types of censorship, but I am pretty close to it for this reason. The criteria for banning or censoring media needs to be a really high bar to clear, and even higher if you're the government.

Of course, Russia does not believe in freedom of speech or expression, as is normal for an authoritarian state. We need to focus on our own turf to make sure we don't head in the same direction.

I don't blame you for this since you aren't obligated to follow another country's political news, but still, I chuckled a bit.

Russian authorities have been blocking popular resources for idiotic reasons for many years now, e.g. LinkedIn was blocked back in 2016. When the 2022 invasion started, with it came much more aggressive blocking, so much of the internet had become unusable without VPN on top of other means of escaping ISP shenanigans already back then. There have been many attempts to block or drastically slow down YouTube and instant messengers, for example; most of them, sadly, successful. So, for example, you cannot make voice calls using any messenger in Russia without a VPN, unless the messenger is Max which Russian authorities publicly endorse because it's a literal unapologetic FSB backdoor disguised as a messenger. So much so that even people who support whatever atrocities the regime perpetrates aren't keen on using it. Everybody who is forced to use it (read: every government employee) have to buy a second phone now.

The reason I chuckled is, basically, the (very predictable) increase in VPN sales started long ago and is a booming business in Russia these days. MAL being on the block list would barely qualify as news because nobody in Russia would even notice: if you were ever visiting MAL, you 100% had a VPN already installed for a million more important reasons like watching YouTube, using Discord, or making calls, so nothing has changed for you; if you weren't visiting MAL, you wouldn't care about another site in the list of tens of thousands of them that were blocked, so nothing has changed yet again.

Note that the Moscow Times is based in Amsterdam and owned by a Netherlands located foundation.

Universal opposition to censorship or just what a particular group finds acceptable? Remember that true free speech includes allowing pedophilia advocacy, racial supremacist ideology, advocacy of ethnic cleansing/genocide, advocacy of eugenics, denial of certain widely held historical narratives, and many others things found abhorrent by many.

Cuts both ways, as Russia Today and Sputnik are banned in most of the collective west. When a Telegram posts links to them, the link is blocked as "illegal in your country" on my phone (I can access them of course from my laptop with a VPN).

Again cuts both ways. Since I am a federal contractor, it is illegal for me to have Tik Tok on my phone because I use it to get work emails for federal projects.

I'm not sure if this is intended to be an argument for or against anything in particular, but I can assure you that there are much more than just two ways possible in this situation, and even if we look at the demonstrated mirror pairs for any particular reason, equating the damage caused by each of these measures is not necessarily arguing in good faith. Feels like the opposite, if anything.

Either way, I don't believe in absolutes because the paradox of tolerance is real and has been repeatedly demonstrated in practice. Apparently, bad actors tend to abuse rules when the rules are too lax (shocker!) and either poison the well for the rest or hijack platforms and then do whatever else with the rules after they get control over them. Thankfully, guardrails that target abuse cases specifically (like some of those you mentioned earlier in your post) have long existed in various rule systems and proven themselves to be very comfortable when they ensure that non-abuse cases are not affected. That is usually what I advocate for, and Russia's case definitely ain't that for obvious reasons.

On the flip side, if "free speech" only allowed for the expression of inoffensive and uncontroversial beliefs then it would have little value.
