Glad this movie turned out to be as fantastic as it looked! It seems like everyone poured their heart into making this.

Fantastic movie. The ending left me feeling breathless and on the verge of tears.
I related a lot to Togashi, so much so that I’m a little hesitant to read the manga, which I’ve heard is pretty different from the movie.
The lead Japanese voice actors delivered great performances; Togashi’s (who had a really nice voice, too) did brilliantly, especially after the time skip (that park scene!), and while Komiya’s didn’t have a lot of emoting to do, I thought he did a great job making Komiya’s high-school and post-time-skip voices distinct.
I actually think that the elementary school part was the weakest, both visually (the children unblinkingly clapping behind Komiya at the sports festival come to mind) and story-wise. I feel they maybe should’ve done more with Togashi’s friends, since they did show Genta being displeased that Togashi was spending time with Komiya, but he never went beyond being vaguely mean. I understand there may have been time constraints, but it did feel like there could’ve been tension there that instead just…fizzled out.

Now that its available to stream on Netflix, I finally watched it on the last day of 2025 and it definitely was the best anime movie(or maybe movie period) I watched this year. Much like the comparison with The First Slam Dunk, it was an entertaining and engrossing movie throughout, and more amazing compare to that, I was a big Slam Dunk fan since I read the manga in the 90s(never watched the anime), and that movie has nostalgia factor in its favor, this movie I have no background with aside from hearing its glowing reviews, so I was very happy that the film turned out to be as good as it was touted to be. The visual of course was the draw but the scores during the racing scene adds so much to the action. I love the dialogs that gets recalled by different characters and how it gets different meaning for those characters in different stages of their lives. Great movie. I should try to read the manga.

The original Rocky film is something else that pulls off the ‘winning wasn’t the point’ thing really well, incidentally (though in that case without making it actually ambiguous).
