is it just me, or do i find it a little disrespectful to use ai for a music based property, even if it's not related to the music portion in general? i know i'm apathetic about ai, but still.

For this one, its not disrespectful imo. I mean this thing sounds just like there doing a chatbot esc type of thing, if this type of thing was announced before AI became a word, you probably wont bat an eye, but because you see AI company you just feel icky about it or in your words apathetic.

The operative difference is theft, chatbots aren't immoral because they don't have to be made by scraping a bunch of people's writing from the internet. AI chatbots on the other hand are ripping off a ton of writers so that these virtual men can talk to you. Many people would feel icky about that even if it was "before AI became a word" because ripping off creatives to enjoy talking to character from a creative work is kind of icky morally.

No? It's insanely disrespectful. To both the fans and actors but also to culture, and the planet. Even when training on specific voices it still uses data from LLM to actually "write" the things they say. It's still contributing to the power and hardware price issue as well as theft. We wouldn't bat an all if it was all human-written lines using voice synth but this is fully AI-Generated BS which can't even be copyrighted in the United States. The Hypnosis Mic community is up in arms about this for these vary reasons. There's no such thing as "ethical AI" despite what AI bros want to pretend. It's disgusting.

To cap it all off, the very game they're using this time had a plot point about how bad AI is. So it's tone-deaf to the IP as well. Just gross.

Apparently this franchise is being discontinued after the upcoming movie and I guess they couldn't just let them go quietly into that good night, no they're taking a few lakes with them so people can ask Ichiro which one of his brothers he'd rather have sex with or whatever.
At least with Doppo there will finally be an AI chatbot who canonically probably would know how to tie a noose so it's not weird when he tells you to!

I may get this mixed up so bare with me, these type of chatbot things basically training off of their own IP right?

I knew this day would come, but man, it'll be sad watching the ensh*ttification spread and infect this industry too... guess it's yet another thing to abandon from now onwards.

The issue is when companies say AI is "trained from scratch" they imply it doesn't know the copyrighted or stolen data, even if they tell it to ignore previous training data the tool itself is made by scraping data.

Training from scratch in the context of character AI and creative output means they train an existing AI to use their parameters to talk or draw like their IP, so it doesn't remove the stolen content from the original program it just shuttles the rules it references so it can make new ones. They still have all of the data that was scraped in the tool itself to decide what sounds the most like each character.

Unless they built a new AI model from scratch without referencing stolen data (which is basically impossibly because AI works on a base level by applying Machine Learning to scraped data), no matter how they train it the program still takes advantage of what was stolen.

So yes, even if they stick their IP in for training data the AI will still reference all of the stolen work and the consumers are most likely reading passages stolen from novels or publicly shared writing.

Besides being gross, I would also just find some writing online that isn't chopped into bits so my special guy can say it, like why would I talk to a character AI when I could just read a fan written story that the AI probably stole from anyway? At least then i get a cohesive plot and character development if I'm lucky, a character AI would just want to suck up my time and never offer any progress, change or new content. Even it wasn't immoral the only way I could see that ever being appealing is them being a well written character with hand crafted lines that reacts to you, but at that point I think I just want a VN, I don't think this was made for me regardless.

Imagine asking Doppo how to kill yourself and he gives you the phone numbers of your relevant suicide hotline and tells you life is worth living.

The idea of the companion bots itself is an old one, but the new technology used to make stuff like this is completely different and ethically problematic. I know a lot of fans have been complaining about this and especially in regards to how this is a franchise about music and supposed to be about creativity and fighting the system.
