My friend and I were having a discussion about anime when I informed him of the shoujo and shounen subgenres and their difference. He started to point out anime he had seen and saying they were shoujo (and wishing he had not seen them, he suddenly hated shoujo and loved shounen). He said Fumoffu, I said no. He said Chobits, I said no (as far as my wits are conserned, these are not shoujo). Then he mentioned I, My, Me, Strawberry Eggs and said it was shoujo. I haven't seen this one (and, judging from its synopsis, I'm quite glad about that fact) and according to him it is shoujo. But according to the user-contributed info here on ANN, it is not.
I'm not sure now, I haven't seen it, and I don't trust my friend's ability to judge shounen or shoujo until he has seen something I know for sure is shoujo. What do you think? And, any good tips for identifying shoujo are greatly appreciated (apparently the short explanations found on the ANN genre submitting page doesn't cut it for me |

Well, shoujo isn't actually a genre, but rather a demographic. It means it was made for girls.
A very large percentage of Shoujo is romance, let's call it "Shoujo Romance," this includes titles like Marmalade Boy and Boys Over Flowers. Additionally, a lot of Shoujo that doesn't focus on romance also features romance very prominently as a secondary theme, Sailor Moon is a prime example. Other Shoujo for youger girls, Cardcaptor Sakura for example, doesn't feature much romantic depth, but still, some of it is there. I honestly can't think of any Shojo right now that doesn't have any romantic plot to it. But, there's lots of Shonen that has romantic plot elements in it too. These are called Shonen Romance, of which tehre is a subset called Shonen Harem. Maison Ikkoku, believe it or not, is a Shonen Romance. Love Hina and Tenchi Muyo are Shonen Harem. So the pressence of a romantic element does not guarantee that something is Shoujo. It is generally fairly easy to figure out though. Take a look at who's perspective the story is being presented from, and who it is likely to appeal to. Chances are, if the main character is a boy who is trying to decide which girl he wants... it's Shounen. If the main character is a girl trying to figure out if a guy likes her or not... probably shoujo. |

Oh, now I get it. So since Strawberry Eggs isn't a romance in the first place (a detail I failed to notice earlier) it's probably not a shounen or shoujo romance. Whether it's a shoujo in the terms of Sailor Moon, as you mentioned, is not for me to discuss because I haven't seen it. But from the summary of the plot I recieved, I guess you really can trust the info supplied by users here.
Thanks, you have improved my knowledge of anime, to put it neatly |

I want to watch Full Moon wo Sagashite a reeeeally loooot. Anyway, I don't know what to recommend to you...I've seen a lot less anime than I've read manga (manga isn't cheap, but it's more so than anime). |

I love Cardcaptor Sakura, does that make me a weirdo?
Actually, I love shoujo and shonen. As long as it's anime, and it's nicely done. I didn't like Sailor Moon though, and I also don't like Dragon Ball. |

1)I guess that would make Fruits Basket a Shoujo Harem, huh? 2)What if the main character is a girl who is trying to decide which guy she wants,or a guy trying to figure out if a girl likes him or not? |

Eh, well, sort of. However, there's a Shoujo Harem 'classic': Fushigi Yuugi.
I'd call it Shounen Romance. Check out Boys Be (manga). |

I agree, what does the classification of Shounen or Shoujo matter? Anime's all equally as good for me and entertaining. I watch whatever anime that I think is excellent and enjoy every minute of it. That goes the same for manga too. |

Because people have preferences, that's why I Like mostly every genre, but I prefer to watch shoujo. I'm not putting it on a pedestal and saying that it's the genre that beats the rest, but it's my personal favorite.

I'm a girl who likes Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, Inu-Yasha and Pokemon all Shounen yet I like shoujo too (mostly maagical girl) I know its a little confusing esspesly with Pretty Sammy. My dad once told me that a firnend of his told him that Ranma 1/2 was shoujo. Well any ways it I think it all depends what you are into.
