Just in case people are wondering, the point of putting chewing gum in the box is purely to comply with Japanese law that only allows supermarkets and convenience stores to sell toys if those toys also have some kind of food product in them.

That's why you get a single tiny piece of candy or gum in so many cheap Japanese toys.
