The Film Classification Board, Saskatchewan Justice, released their ruling on the request made by myself and others that anime be exempted from the ratings-compliance. The ruling was distributed late last Friday.

The GOOD news is that anime has been granted exemption. This means that licensed copies of anime can continue to be sold, rented and shown in the province of SK. (How ridiculous would it be if this was not the case?!)

The BAD news is that this exemption is conditional. Here are the details taken from the ruling:

"The exemption request is therefore granted and will apply to all Saskatchewan retailers and distributors of Japanese Anime subject to the following terms and conditions:

(1) the exemption is limited to a three year period from the date of this decision;

(2) the exemption is limited to Japanese Anime titles bearing a numeric age rating applied by the copyright holder or an authorized distributor;

(3) retailers are to take reasonable steps to ensure that rentals, purchases and displays of Japanese Anime products are age appropriate."

The reasoning behind the conditional ruling is specific:

"Given the commercial nature of the product, however, the exemption will be for a limited time, the purpose of which is to provide the industry with an adjustment period to address the current classification difficulties in this area. The Board is of the view that a three year period is a sufficient timeframe for the distributors and retailers of Japanese Anime to bring their product inventories into compliance with the classification requirements of the Act and regulations. The Board would encourage retailers to begin making the adjustment immediately with respect to new product purchases by requesting Japanese Anime titles that comply with the Canadian Motion Picture Distributor Association’s Home Video Rating Program."

So let’s get on this people and distributors! We need your help. There are efforts currently underway and once they are ready I’ll share the news in the hope of getting the support we need to see this through.

The ruling is 5 pages long so that’s all I’m into typing today (it's from an image file). To request a copy of this ruling just email me at: anime(at)comicreaders.com
