Astro Boy [1980] - Series Collection
Manga Entertainment 1560 min. 7 discs $59.98 11/22/2005

The fact that this boxset even exists is amazing. 51 episodes of the legendary 1980 show? Totally cool. All the episodes are dubbed in English, but to semi-pacify those pining for a Japanese release, the scenes that were deleted from the episodes are included in subtitled Japanese. To be completely honest, this show is kind of boring, what with the whole robot boy zipping around saving lives and Brightening Hearts for 51 repetitive episodes, but its sheer nostalgia counts for quite a bit. Astro Boy is a timeless classic, and even though there are modern shows that can kick its ass around the world 10 times, it’s still worth owning for the sake of owning it.

Several things: First off, the actual price is now $39.99 for this set. Second, the set is actually 8 Discs. Third, all episodes have the japanese audio included with them. Fourth, many deletes scenes from the original dub were restored. Scenes in the deleted section are just simply deleted scenes because there was no english audio track(dialog wise) for the scenes. So Manga couldn't exactly restore them. Other than that, that's pretty much right.

Also, my small gripe was Manga didn't attempt to restore Episode 1 and 2's dub. Consdering some "restored dub dialog" scenes, it's possible Manga did have the dub audio tracks for episode 1 and 2 (considering it was reported awhile back these two episodes were dubbed completely). Actually, the better question is why the episodes were combined in the first place. Pilot episode for TV stations? *Shrug*

And now people can shut up about not reviewing the whole series because she just did so for about FIVE FRIKKIN PAGES

I have 1 of those boxsets (AzuDai). Is that good or bad? ^^;

Odd, considering Manga's own site lists it at 7 discs, and all eps being dub only.

Congrats on the first 100 columns! Here's to the next 100 Razz

For a series that stops making sense whenever it feels like it, Lunar Legend Tsukihime is a whole lot of fun.

...if you like looking at empty parking lots and characters who rarely move. Being a fan of Paint Dries: The Movie and Grass Grows 2: The Reckoning, this series touched my very soul.

I don't want to buy the Slayers movies, but that box is very pretty and I've developed this need to see it on my shelf. Damn you to HELL, ADV!

You may not have noticed this, but that's anime in general.

That's cute and all, but I'm sure the examples that followed get the point across well enough if that didn't.

Am I the only one here who thinks Peacemaker is mediocre and generic? I dunno, maybe it's because I've read too many samurai manga that are supirior in every way that I don't like a series that falls short when it comes to drama and characters (either that or the horrible J-rock pisses me off).
But seeing ADV and Geneon products back-to-back really illustrates what a great deal your getting with the thin pack collections. I haven't bought any anime since Paranoia Agent wrapped up, but I'm probobly going to have to pick Kino's Journey and Kaleido Star up.
Gripeing aside, happy 100.

Oops, you're right. The episodes that I watched, I watched subtitled, but since the back of the box said they were all in English, I thought that only a few of the episodes were subbed. And yeah, there's 8 discs but I didn't think to change that from the info I copied from. So, thanks!

I liked the episode with the baby elephant. Anime cry I almost cried when it was rubbing against a tree trunk thinking it was its mom. It was sooo cute.

Ha ha. I have an advantage over everybody in the contest because I work at a grocery store (a fairly large one) and know all of the foods and items in it... I just felt like saying that.

Edit: Oh ya, happy 100th and junk.

Congrats on your 100th Bamboo!

I'm happy to say that I own 5 of your totally huggable picks. They aren't the thinpaks though. They are the original "fatpaks".Kaleido Star and Kino's Journey are on my radar.

Great reviews as always. I'm looking forward to the next 100!!

Wow, that was teh longest column ever...very nice and I agree with most of the placements, aside from maybe Angelic Layer; it may be a bit predictable, but it is very cute, and not really shounen as it focuses more on characters/relationships. . .that was always my secret opinion of it, anyway. Hmm, I have the Nuku Nuku TV collection and have seen up to episode 4. Will I be disappointed? Maybe, but that's probably the only one of the Nuku Nuku box sets that I'll get, so not too much money spent.
Now, once they release the Elfen Lied Thinpak, I'll pick that one up (to replace a fansubbed version)--there weren't any extras that I'd miss in the original 4-disc release, after all.

On Eva Platinum--I'm not sure if the thinpak is worth buying if you have the old DVDs. . .sure, it has the restored audio & video + the Director's Cut episodes, but it lacks all of the other cool extras in the Platinum single releases. Of course, if you're buying Eva for the first time, it's a good buy.

Wow, you're a really dedicated fan, one3rd. Makes me wonder why you even became involved in anime in the first place. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, congratulations on your 100th column, Bamboo. Cool The only boxset that I own on the column is Angelic Layer and I'm in agreement with what Zalis116 said in terms that AL focuses more on character relations rather than the actual battles themselves (most evident in the second half of the series).
