Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but why is it that when I re-size and crop an image to use for an avatar the picture looks a little fuzzy when I save it once, and progressively fuzzier the more times I save the new image? I think this is a common problem, since I see a lot of users here with similarly "grimy" avatars. How can I avoid this? (The programs I'm using are Paint for cropping and PictureWorks HotShots for resizing.)

That's because whenever you save a picture as .jpg you compress it once more, reducing its quality. It's like making a photocopy from a photocopy repeatedly and its quality deteriorates.
Morale: keep the original picture uncompressed (save it as .bmp or .tif) and make new ones from that original instead of .jpg files. |

Ugh, it still looks kind of grainy. This is the original image. The new image is my current avatar. It was originally a .jpg file, but I switched it to a .bmp file when I saved it on my computer, and then cropped it and saved it as a .jpg again. What am I doing wrong?

If you start with a jpg file, try not to convert it. Converting to bmb and back to jpg reduces quality. If you just want to crop, try a better tool than paint, where you can adapt the quality of jpg compression (very low compression = higher quality, but bigger files; high compression = small files, but blurry images). Paint uses a standard compression which is not that good.
Windows XP has a quite good integrated picture managing tool, and I think ACDSee has a cropping tool, too, even the free version (I have to check at home to be sure). If you search a bit, you can find many image processing tools for free on the internet. |

If that link didn't work, go to http://images.thenexxus.org/gallery/ and search for Wandaba Style. (That is, if you're still interested. Sorry if I'm pestering you.) |

is it ok ?
Don't use Microsoft Paint to compress a picture in .jpg, use the freeware Gimp for example (I don't use it but it's good). |

I personally compress in .gif. It's not the best quality format, but it's better than the grainy JPGs that all those compression programs output.

Thanks for the better pic, Urd. (Aside from the graininess, I didn't like how the color of her eyes was dulled down from red to purple in my picture.) Sadly, I'm not allowed to install and download things on the computer without my parents' permission, so I can't use any of the better software for image compression.

Like everyone said, your problem is probably that your image software is compressing too much.
But there's also some side-effects to resizing. Using different algorithms can yield slightly different results. in PaintShopPro:

You cannot link to a search result since you'll lose the session data - you need to link to the image itself, e.g. http://images.thenexxus.org/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-2023 Unfortunately that's not one of the images I uploaded so I do not have the original image, however since all you're doing is reducing the size it should be OK as long as you resample rather than just resizing and don't compress it too much, which unfortunately does require having something a bit better than paint. If you have a source image and want an avatar made I can do it for you (as long as I'm around at the time, of course). Also, As I think I've mentioned, www.animegalleries.net has a web-based tool for making avatars from images, although I cannot guarantee the quality and they don't seem to have any Wandaba Style images. |
