You have to turn the subtitles on.
At the top of the player where it says "JA" click on it to reveal the option "JA (EN SUBS)" and click that to get English subtitles.
Why that's not the default is strange, maybe an oversight? But there are English subs there.

On Viewster the default subtitles seem random - selecting the right one ads to the many button presses when traversing episodes on my smart TV.
