Well-deserved, and it keeps selling. I can wait to see what Aonuma's team will make after this (remakes/porintgs aside, even if I'm interested in those too)!

Assuming you're asking in earnest, those are lifetime sales of a console launch game. Games which came out much later overlapped it almost immediately. Splatoon 2 is currently at 2.5 million and Mario Odyssey is 1.7 million. I don't see how it's wrong to say Zelda is more popular in the west than in Japan. Admittedly, 'not as popular' for a Nintendo game is still pretty popular compared to the rest of the industry, but comparatively, Zelda is one of the weaker Nintendo franchises in Japan
Comparatively, BOTW sold 2.6 million in the US and Mario Odyssey is at 2.8 million in the US, much closer. Splatoon is below 1 million sales in the US.
