I know a lot of people had problems with Peach being too much of an "action girl" in the first one, and those complaints will probably get worse, but let me be the first to say I have zero problems with Rosalina being cool.

I think it's still trying to "play the hits" and incorporate too much stuff from the whole series at the same time for the sake of audiences being able to do the Pointing Dicaprio meme at the screen (Look, it's the upside down pyramid from Odyssey! it's Bowser Jr. and the shadow brush!) but if it's like the first I think it'll be a solid B- time at the theater so I am kinda sorta excited.

It's a nice trailer, the part with Luigi complimenting Bowser's paiting was pretty amusing. I find it interesting that, unlike some other Western animated film trailers, this focuses more in the action scenes. Is also interesting that Nintendo and Illumination haven't officially revealed Yoshi's appearence, I have the feeling Yoshi is going to be a very popular character among the kids seeing the movie, you would think they would emphasize his presence.
As for Brie Larson as Rosalina, well, I don't have anything against her, she's a very talented actress, I liked her roles in other movies, but this is not going to stop some people from making drama content about the casting, it's probably going to be worse than the discussion centered around Chris Pratt as Mario.
As with happened with the first Mario movie, when this arrives on theaters next year I'll have to watch it dubbed, since animated kids movies are almost always shown dubbed in theaters where I live, not that I'm complaining, because the first Mario movie's Neutral Spanish dub was very well made and it was the first Illumination movie dub where all of the main characters were vocied by professional dub actors instead of celebrities. I wouldn't mind if Brie Larson's usual Neutral Spanish dub VA, Jessica Ángeles, would voice Rosalina in the dub, since it also wouldn't be the first Nintendo character she voiced, as she's also voiced Princess Zelda in Breath of the Wild, its sequel and spin-offs.

I think it looks pretty good, my one concern being that I hope they don’t overdo it with Bowser. He was funny in the first one, and I don’t want him to become annoying here.

Bowser Jr’s voice will take some getting used to, but I’m assuming he’ll sound different with the mask off.

I forgot to mention, I hope that one thing that Illumination does differently in this movie is not using licensed music, I believe that was one of the main criticisms with the first movie, many of the choices, felt very forced and unnecessary, and there were some tracks based on the Mario and Donkey Kong series' music that were going to be used in certain scenes but were replaced with songs like Take on Me and Holding out for a Hero.

Okay then, Larson isn't surprising (she cosplayed Samus for Halloween, so her credentials are known) but BENNY SAFDIE? Okay then

I hope we can get a Luigi's Mansion movie next.

There are signs and hints that Pikmin might get a movie. I personally think they would do very well as short movies before the Nintendo feature films because dang it I miss having all those great short Pixar films.

Considering how big of a Nintendo nerd/fan Brie Larson is, like Jack Black I bet her performance will be great.

The little we heard in the trailer (kindly but exasperated mother figure to the Luma’s) sounded pretty good so far.

I think the focus on action isnt too surprising given kids are going to be entertained more by that kinetic animation. Especially given that this is supposed to be related to a game that is all about movement and action. The comedy bits are fine, but keep moving. That seems to be the theme. Which is a good strategy, imo. I was wondering about Yoshi though.

No problem with the casting. Brie should probably avoid tweeting about the audience though unless negative marketing is the strategy here. It will undoubtedly create dumb, useless drama. I actually have not been a fan of her movies, but my criticisms are more about issues with characters and story than with acting. I fell asleep in Captain Marvel, and nothing in what I did see made me desire to revisit it. I think she as a VA will be fine. I never understood the Pratt debate.

She was commenting about reviewers not the general audience that goes and watches movies. And yet her comments continue to be proven right as time goes by.

Movie would still generate useless drama because as I alluded to above some audiences can’t help whining about dumb shit for clout and just making people needlessly angry.

Either he’s an overexposed and so-so actor in certain roles.

Or he’s a MAGA/MAGA Apologist who you can’t like because of that.

Or both.

I think most of the complaints were mainly because it was pretty much at the exact same time when they replaced Charles Martinet (I forget if they officially announced him retiring from the role then or before, I know a lot of people kind of cracked it when Super Mario Wonder came out) and then they still had him in the movie, so a lot of people were like "but Charles Martinet is literally right there, why not let the Mario guy do Mario?" And yeah, whether you think he's a decent actor or not, it is an undeniable fact that Pratt was/still is overexposed in movies. As for the actual performance, I think Pratt was... fine. My only problem was he's barely trying to sound any different (though he is trying a little, unlike Seth Rogen as DK), so it only made it seem like more of a stark change from what people have expected Mario to sound like for nearly 30 years.

Considering how outrage farming the first movie backfired and ended with it making over a billion dollars at the box office, I doubt Nintendo would be unaware or give a damn. And it's especially silly to claim that when Larson has done commercials for Nintendo for years. If anything more focus is on her being a lifelong Nintendo fangirl.

I guess I kind of figured that instead of a straight-up Galaxy adaption they would find a way to work in content from other Mario games.

Rosalina has joined the fight!

I was not a fan of the first movie and I'm probably skipping this, but... I get the impression that they are really making Rosealina into a clone equivalent of girl-boss Peach? Like, in the Galaxy game, she came off as a more refined maternal figure to the Luma. You'd hope they'd avoid have two of the girls being and talking exactly the same... But as far as first impressions go this wasn't a great one... so I could be wrong as they show more... Well, it'll still make money, so I doubt anyone cares...

I remember that it was a rather nonsensical complaint especially if one remembers when the casting list was first revealed and the only actor I don’t think drew any complaints was Jack Black. Then after all that it was why was Martinet not cast as Mario when that complaint wasn’t raised from the outset. And when it was never going to happen in the first place.

And I still remember the criticism Super Mario Sunshine got back in the day for nearly every character having spoken dialogue in the cutscenes which led to Nintendo overcorrecting by having the characters barely speak/not speak at all in subsequent games

Looks amazing!!! SMG is probably my favorite Mario game including the sequel, so I am very much looking forward to this.

What I'm NOT looking forward to is the constant culture war nonsense, mainly from the anti Brie Larson crowd. Not to mention the people who get heavily critical about children's movies not being "deep enough" like this is supposed to be Pixar's Up or something.
