When I watch a exceptional anime, I am drawn to the quirky characters of the story. But, whenever the anime nears its finality, I tend to shy away from seeing the last episode since it would mean the end. To some point, it gets depressing when I see a great anime series end.
I wonder if its just me being weird, or did it happen to you?

Depends on how good the series is, I guess. Though that happens with all good shows I watch.

I felt a little odd reading the last volume of the .hack//legend of the twilight manga... seeing as I'd spent the last couple years watching all 3 anime (at the time), playing though all 4 of the original games and such, it was simply odd to realize that this lil' book was the last bit of this huge saga I had to go.
I course, that bunch of short stories at the end helped bring home the idea that it wasn't over, just stopping for awhile. And now I have to scrape together funds for a whole new game/anime saga... my poor wallet.
The only other thing that comes to mind is the first Slayers TV season. That was the very first anime I saw after the 'gateway' show of DBZ, and the one I attribute to starting my fandom (I remember at the time being stunned at how better it was than DBZ and suddenly being desperate to know what other shows I'd been missing out on.) But, as I'd find out, our local rental shop was missing the last 2 VHS volumes. Which I couldn't find for sale. I watched all of Slayers Next, about half of Slayers try (before stupid plot drove me away), the first movie and the first couple Naga OVA. Then a friend of mine found the last volumes. I finally watched the ending of season 1, in the art room after school, a good 3 years after I'd started that season. That was a surreal afternoon for me.

Indeed, I've had lingering feelings after a show ended, Honey and Clover did that, as did E7, plus, tons of other shows.

For more than 1 year, I could not accept the death of my favourite character in Samurai 7. I was angry with the producers. This is a series I love to hate and hate to love. It screwed my emotions. Never fall in love with a Samurai because they are suppose to die. I've temporarily stopped watching samurai titles and switched to pure mecha for a change. I am ok now.

I agree with gunbuster. But it really is a great anime.
Koi Kaze made me feel weird after watching it entirely. It's something I couldn't quite put my finger on. But in the most part I accepted the outcome.
As for movies, Grave of the Fireflies has always left me hating the world and how it is.

I got really upset when Haibane Renmei finished, it's the only anime that's moved me to tears just because it had finished and I couldn't watch any more. I felt pretty silly, and was glad lots of people couldn't see me! I often stop watching series half way through because I feel they are so special I want to be in the right mood to savour and appreciate them like Ergo Proxy and Mushishi. They haven't relaly ended in my mind if I've only seen a quarter to half of the series.

Right on with HR, that is one heck of a darn good anime, agree with you here. Athough I am sort of opposite of you. I will watch a series, at a good pace, even really good ones. And with HR in fact, I re-wacth fairly often. Cry everytime.
Others that fall into this category for me: Figure 17, Now and Then, Here and There, Kino's Journey, stuff like that. But that is more to the fact that they are well done emotionally based shows that have multiple levels of conflict and resolution, than to the fact that they are just ending.
As for one that I was upset just because it ended, well you guys are probably going to laugh. I would have to say Cowboy Bebop. I mean it was such a well made show, with a good story basis that I wish it could just go on and on. It really is sad there will be no more. Alas, but all good things must come to an end.

Hmmm, series where I was reluctant to watch the ending.., only one springs to mind & that's Evangelion. I was following this series, episode by pain-staking episode between 1996-98, & when I realised there were movies which finally wrapped up the whole story, I bought the movies on VCD, but they sat on the shelf for a year before I could summon the courage to actually watch them. I was in tears when the credits of End of Evangelion rolled, & there was an empty space inside of me; the characters were like old friends, & for their adventures to finally have finished upset me loads.

I think there's really one anime that seeing the end episode affected very, very strongly, and not just because of what happened in that episode. When I reached the end of the 200th episode of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, tears began streaming down my face. Not just because that was a very well done episode (I had a seperate cascade of tears for that), but because for me, it was the end of an era. I first got into the show in 1997, and it was really my kickstart into anime (minus Voltron and Speed Racer). It was 9 years before I managed to see all of the show, and the impact was strong. The rest of the night, I felt almost empty. I didn't like saying goodbye to a show that had meant so much to me, kept me going through tough times, and even ended up introducing me to my husband.
Now, there are plenty of other anime that have moved me. I cried on and off for a few days after watching the last episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena, just because it was a very emotional episode. It was the "oh no, Utena is over!" feeling though, but rather, just getting through a very emotional episode especially with regard to whether or not Utena died, ever existed, was lost forever, etc. However, that was nothing to the true heartache I felt finishing BSSM. Even watching Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (live-action version of the show) didn't quite ease my mind, and ended up tearing me up a bit again at the end, as there really isn't anything left, except for some random musicals.

I think anime effects everyone in some way, that's why I like to watch it.
But as far as specific anime goes, I'm with Eva Fiend, Evangelion was the one that got me the most.

Um....I cried when I watched the Fullmetal Alchemist movie because the end was heartbreaking and sweet all at the same time, and also because it was like "Aww, no more FMA ever!"
I also cried at the end of Cowboy Bebop....But I don't really have to explain myself there.
Also, building off of what Mylene-san said about Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, I got a little teary when I finally saw the last episode of Shaman King. SK was my first real anime (even though I watched the crap-tastic dub for two years), and to finally see it all the way through in Japanese was sort of the end of something I'd pursued for all of my anime career. Even though the last episode was...um...not well done. I got up from my computer and sighed, and when my mom asked what was wrong, I said "Oh, nothing....I've just finished Shaman King." She left me alone for a bit afterwards.

Shaman King's ending left me with a foul taste in my mouth. It wasn't an ending the series deserved... It deserved something better, since that ending was pathetic. And of course, there are a lot of questions left unanswered.
I only remember crying to the end of Digimon 01 and 02... I wasn't sure of watching it, but I did (and even recorded that). I cried a lot. Why? Don't remember exactly, but I cried (probably because I had a bit of a crush on Jou)
If there's a series I'm not able to watch the end of... It's Captain Tsubasa (since the series still has no end, at least in the manga. The anime's totally different ¬¬). No one really know how will it end, but we CT fans hope it doesn't end too soon.

The ending of Yu-Gi-Oh! was actually pretty heartbreaking for me a bit. The coolest character Yami(or Atemu) leaving for the afterlife and his friends begging him to stay. It was too much. I think I even saw Kaiba with tears in his eyes in the end. And I was talking about the Japanese version. Not the horrid dub.
The ever famous Luffy vs Usopp fight of One Piece also was a tearjerker. I was actually crying through the whole thing. Even through the fight scenes. It's sad to see who two really good friends are fighting each other in the end. And at the end of the fight, you can tell that it hurt both Luffy and Usopp. But on the inside.
Since so many people are talking about Shaman King and its ending, I think I'll give my two cents on it. The ending was actually very weird. In truth, everything that happened was meaningless. Yoh didn't become Shaman King, Yoh died then was somehow brought back to life, Hao may be dead but he'll just come back in another 500 years for the next Shaman Tournament, and none of the chracters got what they desired. It doesn't even say if Hao became Shaman King. The show is really good but the ending could've been so much better.
