I just watched Voices of a Distant Star (after having to convince my parents that it was not bad, ***RANT WARNING*** since my local Blockbuster is trigger-happy with the Youth-Restricted-Viewing labels that they put on all the anime but seem to forget to put them on the porn and stuff), but anyways, I didn't get the ending. I mean spoiler[did the chick die, and what was up with the whole "can a thought travel" thing]? I watched it subbed and dubbed (Sub first), and still didn't get the ending. That She and Her Cat was cool though. Well, does anyone know, or think they know, what the ending is about?[/spoiler]

spoiler[ The last scene takes place in two different time frames. The actual fighting is taking place (I think, since the ships appear to be using some science-fantasy faster than light engine) only a few months after the girl left earth. Her boyfriend's sequences are taking place years later, due to the constraints of the speed of the signal. This means that he's getting mail from a long-dead girl. But, because they love each other so strongly, their minds are able to cross the time and distance between them to share a single thought.]

Gah, I hope that's readable. It's been months since I saw it, so don't be afraid to call me out on my mistakes.

spoiler[actually... i was under the impression that the battle was won, and that new faster-than-light technology was going to bring them home...? (read the newspaper headlines, right before the end of the show)
(updated)
August 3 2047: Mikako is at Pluto, when the ship is attacked by Tarsians. They warp a light year away.
August 4 2047: Mikako sends a message, which takes over a year to reach Earth, telling him that they're warping 8 LY away.
September 16 2047: Mikako explores the planet, fights the battle at Sirius. She also sends the message "Hello to the 24 year old Noboru from the 15 year old Mikako"
January 24 2048: Noboru doesn't receive any messages.
August 20(?) 2048: Noboru receives the message sent August 4th 2047.
March 26 2056: Noboru receives the message from Sirius.

Assuming the messages travel at the speed of light and their estimated delivery times are accurate (which appears to be the case), then Mikako can't have spent more than a few days traveling at the speed of light. We know this because the messages sent back to Earth are accurate to EARTH times because both the August 2048 and March 2056 messages are shown being sent from Mikako's phone, and are shown being received by Noboru, and the dates are accurate in both cases. (This also means that if Mikako's alive, she's 24 as well, as she spent most of her time sitting around typing messages and killing aliens, not in warp)

We know the battle was a success, because we see Mikako defeat the last alien ship. We also know the last battle was a success because the paper already says it was a victory. The relevant part reads "Kiken Kanousei ha RISHITEA-go", which is translated something along the lines of "Possibility of Return: Lucitea". It's no contest that the humans won the battle. Also, a ship like that (carrying ~1000 personel) would need to be self-supporting, including recycling life support and such. Since it's apparent it couldn't return home, the crew on it could support themselves until assistance could be levied.

Later on (2050 or something) the Tarsians could've come back and finished off the Lucitea.. However, I'm not so certain that's the case either, as another newspaper mentions "Super Light Speed Communciations", which is, I think, indicative of an attempt to contact the fleet.]

Or did I mis-understand the ending?

I need to go back and watch the movie again but here's my understanding:

spoiler[
The humans won the battle, but only the Lucitea survived the battle with the Tarsians. However, the fleet that went to defeat the Tarsians didn't know how to get home, there was a brief message before one of the "jump" that said in essence "Tell your family your ok" and "The fleet is unsure of how to get home." So my take on the ending was that the Lucitea would probably stay in orbit around Sirius and wait for help, this is implied by the fact that when Earth received the messages and the date of the newspapers - if the Lucitea came back after the battle Earth would already know about the defeat. Also, I took the fact that the boyfriend was an "officer in the fleet" that he might be going back to find her.
]

But like I said - I need to go back and watch it again. Now here's my question: what was the meaning of the scene between the girl and the Tarsians, right before the fighting started.

The interesting thing about Voices is that it is so abstract. Every person can take something different from it. Personally I think it is one of the best anime of I have ever seen. I think the whole thing boils down to one thing. True love overcomes all. Whether she lived or died doesn't matter. If she got home doesn't matter. The fact is they loved each other. Loved each other enough that he waited... for almost 10 years, and thats just from the window in his life we saw. True love overcomes all... and thats it.
