There is a growing increase of anime/manga being used as source material for films. Recent example include Death Note, Dororo and the Prince of Tennis which were box office hit in Japan and just recently I heard that Warner Bros is planning to do a Robotech live action. My question is there any other anime or manga would you like to see turn into a live action?

Personally, I believe there are some anime/manga that are not suited for live action because it may look rediclious or too chessy in actual reality. For instance, I think Dragon Ball Z will come off looking funny with the hair style and they would need buff looking actors to portray the characters. I'm a big fan of the show but I just don't see it happening. With CG, they can probably pull off anything in the show but just because they can doesn't mean it will work well as a good movie.

There are some I think would lend itself well into live action. It will depend on the context of the story and if it seems plausible in the real world. Blood the Last Vampire would work since the anime itself had somewhat believable looking characters and the story isn't too "cartoony" or corny- My definition of corny is when there are people, places or things that would look over-the-top stupid. I suppose I'm contradicting myself by saying "believable" when I'm talking about a story with vampires involve but I'm talking about a different kind of believability. Its hard for me to explain. Whats your take on this topic?

I can't think of any anime/manga I would like to see turn into live action right now since the ones I would like to see has been already done. Maybe I would like to see the Guyver live action redone with a larger budget this time around.

Well...Nothing really.

I just don't particularily see the advantage of adapting something to live action. Stuff thats animated is probably better suited to an animated medium anyway. I like animation. I don't find any problems in watching something animated over something live-action. Special effects and whatnot are probably easier to do in animation anyway. I think I'd rather see a big buget OVA version instead such as the case was with Hellsing Ultimate.

Live action stuff? For some reason, I feel inclined to say Vampire Hunter D...

I don't really know, to be honest with you. I love anime because it's anime... and somehow, I don't think that many of my favorite titles would translate too well if made into live-action features. I guess I haven't seen a good live-action version of any anime, so my opinions are a bit lacking.

I know this thread isn't about the problems of adapting, but I kind of feel like I should mention them, since they are a big part of why I really don't care if there is ever a live action adaption. The two big problems with any live action adaption of an anime property are the special effects and good old adaption decay.

The first is pretty obvious with any series that has a lot of effects. How expensive would it be to adapt pretty much any mecha series? And imagine the costs of adapting pretty much any magic heavy series. Even simple action series would cost a fortune.

The second comes from the fact that Hollywood producers and/or directors (and sometimes the studio heads who really should know better) often think they are much smarter than the orginal creators who made a huge hit. They tinker with the plot until, well, you get something that sort of might be kinda like what they started out adapting.

However, if those problems could be addressed and minimized, if Hollywood could be trusted to cast people who can act the parts rather than just add "star power" to the movie, then I would love to see a live action adaption of Gunslinger Girl. The drama of the handler/girl relationship and the sheer impact of any one of the girl's known back stories would make one hell of a compelling action drama movie.

Still, I think the precentage of really bad live action adaptions is so heavily skewed toward total garbage, that I really fear for any license.

I mean, who cares if Death Note is going to be live action when Uwe Boll is directing? Anime cry

With today's technology, I think it would be a great idea if Hollywood made a live-action version of Panda Z. It'll be a lot better than whatever WB/Maguire Entertainment comes up with for Robotech.

Believe it or not, there is a Dragon Ball live action movie. I watched it when I was younger. It's not Japanese though. It's called Xin Qi Long Zhu I don't remember much about it so I can't give you the exact plot, or if it follows the anime's storyline.

That would be awesome. I would definitely watch that if it came out - that is, if they don't include Dakota Fanning as a cast member.

I do not really like live actions of anime or manga.

I'm never impressed- especially if the anime or manga used has contents out of the ordinary. I mean, it's anime because anything can happen there. I really do not like live actions. Another reason is because I love anime because of the drawing. I really admire the people who drew these anime characters. They're amazing.

The only live action anime I really liked is [was?] Gokusen. I was not able to watch all of the animated series, and some say it was way better than the live action, but I appreciated it just as well. But I liked Gokusen more than Gokusen 2. GTO is fine, but I like the animated series better.

As for the Dragonball Live, what was that about?

The manga I most wanted a live action adaptation of actually already happened: Mars. I think this was a manga that wouldn't have worked as well animated, because the pacing can get really slow sometimes, but it worked beautifully as a live action (I consider the adaptation to be better than the original actually).

I think live action can definitely be better than animation for certain things. Another example is Nodame Cantabile. In the live action, they were able to show people actually playing instruments (or pretending to play as the case may be) while the anime had a lot of stills during the concert sequences.

That said, I can't think of anything right now the I would particularly like to see as a live action rather than an anime. Perhaps the manga Imadoki! since I think it would work really well as a drama, following in the footsteps of Hana Yori Dango. Of course, I just think Watase Yuu needs more adaptations done Razz

transformers was one of the few good anime adaptions... and even then it wasn't that "good". Just insane special effects.

Except that it wasn't an anime adaptation, as it was adapting the original 80s American cartoon, and not any of the 90s/00s Japanese spinoffs.

I wouldn't mind seeing some anime/manga made into live action. Hellsing would make an awesome live action movie! Of course, I would prefer it to be done by someone who could do it justice. And I think Blood + ( the tv series) would be a good live action series. But yeah, there's also lots of anime/manga that just
wouldn't translate well even with CG effects and DBZ is one of them. Nothing against CGI, but it's often overused and it doesn't always look right.

As for changes in story, I don't mind as long as they're minor and don't take away from the original story. I know alot of fans get upset when they're favorite comic or book is changed, but sometimes it's necessary when making a movie. Plus, not all changes are bad. For example, in the recent Spiderman movies, Peter
Parker's body can generate it's own webbing, instead of him having to make it, like he did in the comic. Which makes more sense; if he has the other abilities of a spider, why not that one? Though thankfully, the webbing comes out of his wrists, unlike the spider, which comes out of it's butt!

For me, it would be (in no particular order):
Cowboy BeBop
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Read Or Die
Last Exile

There are others in my list, but I can't think of them off the top of my head right now.

I think the more "grounded" an anime is in the real world to begin with, the easier it is to adapt into live-action. You can have small-to-medium sized mecha if it's believable enough, IMO, but make 'em too big, and I think that kills the suspension of disbelief for most casual viewers (I have my reservations about the live-action Voltron movie, but I hope it proves me wrong). Cybernetics, magical powers, and hard science-fiction are fairly mainstream these days, too.

I think Dragonball Z could be translated quite easily into a live-action movie, but I don't believe it would be a good one, though. In order to prevent people--mostly non-anime fans--from dying of laughter in the theatres, it would require almost a complete overhaul of the original source material to the point where it wouldn't be worth it.

Some anime simply work best as anime because it takes full-advantage of being in that medium...

If it were well directed, I think Serial Experiments Lain would actually do quite well as a live action film. The character designs are all fairly realistic, so it's not like there'd be too much of a problem translating it to real life, and the environment of the Wired is certainly something that a lot of people these days would be able to relate to. Its length is such that you could easily make it a two and a half hour movie; I think the whole series runs about 6 and a half hours, so just cut some of the extended staredown sequences and you've got it. I love surreal movies that scare you without having monsters and slashers and all that, so I think this would be really cool.

My only concern is that whoever was handling the project would try to turn it from a mind-bending psycho-thriller to a Matrix-esque action film.

I would like to see maybe a live-action version of Interlude.

It is not a long running series so you wouldn't have very much of the source material cut. It is also very doable under current technology as a live action movie, without resorting to any sort of cheese factor or cheap tricks. It's dark, psychological, and has a screwy ending. It would also have huge cross-over appeal.

I'd honestly love to see many older titles turned into big screen movies. Many science fiction themed shows fit the bill. Since movie making technology has come a long way I think now we can truly give science fiction anime and manga a better showing and really make something that could be awe inspiring. SOme of these titles I'd love to see made into movies would be Patlabor, Big Wars, Ghost In The Shell, or Armitage. I think if Battle Angel Alita can be done right it could give hope that other classic or newer science fiction titles could be given some justice with a good Hollywood film.
