Until today I have never heard of fandubs. I thought there were only fansubs, and the dubbing of the anime in English and Japanese. How many of these things are out there? How silimar are they to there relative "cousin" of fansubs?

I don't know how many are out there, but there is at least one website dedicated to amateur voice acting and I know there's quite a few fandubs on there.
As for the similarity...I'm not quite sure what you are looking for. They are just like fansubs in that it's only the unlicensed stuff that is supposed to be fandubbed....it's just dubbed by amateur voice actors instead of subtitled or dubbed by professionals.

(I am part of a fandub for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon by the way.)

--SCRATCH-- Looks like Cassandra jumped on it. :)

Fandubs are... well, amateur voice actors/actresses redubbing shows.

Sailor Moon is the usual fandub fodder, although other series get dubbed here and there. I recall Kodocha getting a dub, too.

Due to the nature of the fandub, the sound quality typically suffers a lot in comparison to professional dubs, be they Japanese or English. Some dubs restore the music track, or generate new music as necessary. Typically, though, if no OSTs are available, it's really hard to retain the original audio, except through carefully picking out music and moving it around.

Fandubs are fun, but they also show just how much poor audio facilities can negatively impact the overall performance of the show... and, sadly, most of the time fandubs use very poor facilities, due to the dispersed locations of the actors.

(PS: Given that it's still an illegally produced fan-work, no links or active group names, please... Same applies to parody dubs, which almost certainly come up in this thread as well.)

I thought parodies, travesties(sp?), satires, and homages were protected under copyright law, oh well. Well fansubs must be pretty rare if I had never heard of them before. Unforunately there will be always bootlegs and forgeries in this world.

That's what I thought too. Then I checked a few things.

Parodies are ok, as long as you don't use any of the original material. So if you wanted to fandub Sailor Moon, you would also have to do all the animation youself too.

Taking the original Sailor Moon and recording over it is still illegal.

I've only experienced 2 fandubs so far. A very painful Naruto one Anime dazed , and a pretty fun liveaction sailormoon one. The main problem is the mics they use. They're really bad most of the time. >.< I'm looking into getting the one SailorStars dub that I hear is out there of pretty good quality.

A while ago I saw a fandub for Dragonball Z Movie 5. It was actually very funny considering nothing was properly pronounced and everything was completely off cue.

they're typically extremely amature productions that can't possibly retain the music and FX tracks. Usually they self destruct 2-3 episodes in. And yes, people don't bother to buy good microphones or a decent mixer either.

Fan parodies are another matter completely, and even the old ones tended to be fairly professional. Except mine, which were done in the biggest kludge fashion you can possibly imagine Smile

I remember watching one episode or two of a Kodocha fandub. The sound quality was awful but I was actually quite surprised by how well they pulled off something I would normally consider "undubbable".

Because some people will go do great lengths to help themselves and others be lazy, and because they have dreams of fame and fortune, maybe someday achieving the lowest levels of mediocrity as a dubber

Actually one of the dub actresses on Rahxephon did fandubbing when she was younger. She also got professional stage training too, though.

Be LAZY?! Some people PREFER dubs, ya know.

Why do people do it? Because some people like to hear their own language when they are watching a show. Fandubbers try to provide that. (Granted, there are some bad fandubs out there but there are some good ones...they just don't get around as much as the bad ones do.)

I'd guess that the point most of the time is just to have fun. In otherwords, the purpose really is quite different from that of fansubs.

Most fandubs that I've heard of focus on what we often point out as titles that legitimately deserve a fansub, titles that have been out for a while and have yet to be picked up domesticly, ie: Sailor Stars.

Personal preference has no bearing on artistic integrity. People watch dubs because they're too lazy to read. I've been told hundreds of times "I don't want to read my movies". If you can't read fast enough, learn to. You can look at the pretty pictures and read subs at the same time.

See the latest sub/dub war thread for an expansion on this summary, or if you want to argue the point, it being more on-topic there.

(dyslexics and similar dissabilities obvious exceptions)
