I was watching TV and they have this show called Turner Classic Movies, where they show the essential old movies that everyone should watch. Then I got to wondering what everyone thinks the essential anime movies everyone should watch. Or if someone who had no knowledge of anime, and they asked you which movies should he/she watch, to get a good solid grasp on what anime used to be, and what it is now.

I also know that I might be asking old questions that someone has already asked, but let's face it I am too lazy to look back through 70 pages. But if someone has the link to a post similiar to mine, I'd like to read what everyone wrote. Thanks Wink

This one is for anime in general:
animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5862

This one is for romance anime:
animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5701

This one is just a general suggestions thread, but since it goes to about 4 pages, I thought I'd throw it in:
animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5579

Here's another, but remember this just based on people's opinions:

A preliminary list of the essentials (movies only) are Akira, Princess Mononoke, Ninja Scroll, Graveyard of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, and Vampire Hunter D. These are not necassarily my favorites (in fact one of them I downright despise), but each one is a classic in its own way. Any serious fan should eventually see all of them.

Those series aren't classics or even must sees in my opinion. Those are series that got huge fanboy-driven hype machines in America. I don't mean to come off as an elitest or something, but thats the truth. US anime fandom is wee-bit skewed. I'm sure Vampire Hunter D means jack-shit to any anime creators or manga-ka. Some real classics would be: Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy), Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Lupin III, and Mobile Suit Gundam (the original series, not Wing or whatever). Just a few off the top of my head.

I know some of those series might not be "essential" as to what originally came out, but I guess it's just the way things are.

I'm going to assume that most of the fans today are more interested in something a little more recent. Thus, this gets into the whole old school anime vs. the new school argument. But I'm only 20, so I can't really say I'm qualified (though I'd like a few of them someday Wink.)

Wow! How'd you see all of the older titles? I'm actually interested in watching Lupin, but I can't find a lot of them on R1 DVD.

Please, tell me your secret... Shocked

Actually, none of them are series at all, I was refering to movies only. I selected those titles because they are movies that everyone talks about and are remembered. Yes, I agree that some of the Lupin III movies are quite good and way better than some of the ones in my list, but since they are a little obscure I did not want to mention them as "essentials."

The funny thing is the Count of Cagliostro is based off of a real figure from history. There was also a novel about Arsene Lupin the First's adventures in Cagliostro.
