Has anyone read Osamu Tezuka's Buddha? I was thinking of giving the first 3 volumes to a friend as a present.

I've seen a little sniglet of it and was really impressed, but I'm not sure if this would be a decent present since the set is not complete; the 5 remaining volumes are not out yet.

Is Vol.3 a good stopping point in the story?

Well I've read this and it's an excellent book. Almost like a fantasic Disney movie. All regilious reference aside, Osama Tezuka's can write a very good and intriguing book. It feels epic in a way and by the end of the first volume, I felt sad for the character. I think this is a highly underrated because it deal with regilous matter. Don't worry though, it won't change you Christian and Cath into Buddhist. It's just a good manga that show human compassion.

Buddha: Vols 1 & 2 won the Eisner Award too this year. I think that's the reason why it's selling really well on amazon's boarder (in the top 15 for manga). Pick it up, it's one of Tezuka's best material.

All these books are great, and volume 4 is out now. Probobly the best thing from Tezuka out right now.

I also have to recommend Buddha as well. Aside from the Phoenix manga series, the Buddha Manga is one of Tezuka's best works intended for adults

Like the title suggests its about the life of Buddha and his spiritual journey. Its a great read and you definitally don't need to follow the religion to enjoy it.

Wow. Certainly sounds like a simple premise. Now, is this as the life of Buddha was envisioned or is it some Shoujo manga with buddha having super-powers and destryoing the evil demon?!

Either way. Sounds good. Laughing

Read the overview: It's just Osamu's take on Siddhartha's life.
http://www.vertical-inc.com/buddha_overview.html

Siddhartha doesn't really make a presense until the second volume. Instead the first volume focus on Chapra, a brave boy born into slavery slave are consider less than human). He wants to change his fate so he can be together with his mother and live happily. He meets up with Tatta, a boy who has a gift to process animal. (this is the only super-natural power). They get caught up in a middle of war between two cities. There are more character that get caught up in the plot.

The second volume takes place 10 to 15 Years after the first. That's why it feels epic in a way.

I really like it and it doesn't push any religious stuff onto you.

Man. I thought this topic was dead, since no one promptly (5 months is prompt...if you're a tree) responded. Anyway, rather than give my friend an incomplete set, I gave something else for a birthday present.

Afterwards, I, promptly (in human terms) bought the first three (fouth volume was not released then) for myself. I have no regrets. In fact, I'm patiently waiting for the fifth book to come out.
