Cool, I'm glad to see a review up about this, and I must say, Zac; the review fits quite perfectly with the impressions I've gotten from the trailers. I'll probably check this out some time over the next week, because I want to see some of those super-shiny colors (but wow, 2h10mins long? that is sizeable for a Spped Racer remake, I think).

On a side note: that's Matthew Fox playing Racer X? I had no idea, hehe.

The reviews I've been reading about this movie have actually been mostly positive. I was still planning on watching it even if they weren't. I'm hoping I'll see it tonight. Good review, Zac.

Brilliant review, Zac. That pretty much tells me everything I need to know about the film. Good on ya!

Eh, if it's all two-hours of hyperkinetic neon tracking shots, I'll wait a few months and rent the DVD.

Not only would that $9.50 Canadian be much better spent on seeing Iron Man, the best non-Pixar summer film I've seen since, at the very least, Spider-Man 2, for a second time, but two hours of what I've seen of the Speed Racer film in clips and trailers would almost certainly be a motion-sickness headache-inducing machine for me if seen on the big screen.

Really? It got a 34% last time I checked Rotten Tomatoes.

In my option, that is because the monkey didn't have enough screen time and Speed Racer looked like a 20 something yuppie.

Great review though Zac, you did a fantastic job.

I guess I should have said I didn't read very many reviews of it. Anime smile + sweatdrop IGN gave it a 4.5 out of 5.

This is definitely not a movie to go see if you are photo-epileptic in any way. Anime dazed

Of course, IGN is the best source of opinion Rolling Eyes Then again, so is anything on the internet.

Personally, the review makes an excellent point. It's being true to the original source, but whether that's good, considering the source, is up to the viewer.

It's been a while since I've seen any film that took itself so seriously. I mean, let's face it, just about every movie nowadays has been tongue-in-cheek, you might as well be watching a straight comedy. So it sounds fun for a change of pace.

You know, I recall the first time I heard about this movie being greenlit. It was from this site I heard the announcement and Vince Vaughn was in ties to play Racer X. Seems so long ago.

I don't really care for Rotten Tomatoes; the only thing worse then one opinion is opinons en masse, averaged together to seem like a legit score. But that's not what I want to talk about...

Here's the bigger question: Does this pave the way for future american live-action anime movies to be sucessful? Or does Speed Racer doom this movie-making genre? (like, how video game movies are more or less always awful)

No worse than ANN or any other sites out there out there, like you said. Besides, the reviewers over at IGN have similar tastes to someone like me so I tend to trust them more than some reviewers out there.

Creatively, it's a relatively brand-new genre so it's too early to say if this film "paves the way" for the other adaptations in production to be good. More important at this stage is the box office, which right now isn't looking very good. Nobody is predicting this will do more than $35 million this weekend, to be beaten soundly by Iron Man's second weekend tally of $50m+.

Video game movies are largely considered awful but they rarely crack a $40m budget and are usually guaranteed to find financial success at least on DVD. They are also usually dumped into the multiplex during the doldrums of early fall and early spring.

Speed Racer on the other hand is a $120m summer tentpole (and that number doesn't include marketing, which was probably around $100m) that was supposed to contend with Iron Man and Narnia. It looks like it's going to struggle to $80-90m or so, and that's generous considering the insane amount of competition and generally poor reviews. With worldwide and home video grosses considered, it'll probably break even if not make a little cash down the road, but that's it.

All that math aside, if it's perceived as a flop, it doesn't bode well for future live-action films based on anime series in terms of actually getting produced.

Ah ha ha this movie sounds amazing and attractive Smile.

Also there was a sort of anime live action movie..."Aeon Flux," but that was terrible.

That said, it is interesting how much this coincides with Joe Morgenstern's review of this movie, so considering that two opinions that I trust both say "Ehhhh" I'll keep that in mind.

Ironically, the original Speed Racer show was more often about dinosaurs and ninjas than actual racing.

The ninjas did drive cars, though.
