Dai Shogun doesn't count as an anime, almost. It's pretty much a slideshow. But I have a theory as to why. Look at the cast: Ayako Kawasumi, Tetsuya Kakihara, Yukari Tamura, Miyuki Sawashiro. These are big names in voice acting, and they can't be cheap. So what I think happened is that the makers of the anime looked at their budget and thought "Hey, out voice acting budget is really high. Let's go get some of the biggest names out there". And they did just that. However, after the contracts for the voice acting were signed, they realized that it was the WHOLE budget, not just for the voice acting. So they had to animate the show with whatever chump change was left.

If you liked what you saw of One Piece, I'd highly recommend going back and watching the rest of it. The episode count is pretty insane, but there's a lot of great content that's worth watching. The arcs from the end of collection 9 through collection 13 are especially good and easily outshine the arcs in collection 14.

My youngest brother loves the One Piece anime, and in fact seems to prefer watching the super-long shows (two of his first anime? Hunter X Hunter and Naruto). I've read the manga, so that's something we can both talk about and enjoy, which I appreciate.
(Now that i'm a tired old man [26] i have a hard time getting the energy to watch anything longer than 26 episodes) Question for the Dragonair reviewer: what anime do you have in mind specifically when you say that fanservice shows can have compelling stories? |

I'm guessing that people are buying Dai Shogun solely for the cover art.
On One Piece, I just watched the Thiller Bark arc last week, in my now 6 month long quest to catch up on One Piece (and Conan). I would agree that the arcs stand alone pretty well. Luffy's powers aren't much explained past the first episode other than he's made of rubber because devil fruit. There are powers he uses later in the arc that are introduced and explained in the previous larger story arc, Water 7. I don't know if they are used in the filler arc, as I am not watching the filler to save time. So if they were used, they were explained in the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc. Overall, it is one of the best shonen I have seen, second only to Hunter x Hunter (2011). As to Dragonar Academy, if that is the worst you've seen, you're lucky pal. If you are offended by casual molestation of women, don't watch Hagure Yuusha (Rogue Hero something or other in English, Aesthetica maybe) or Daimidaler. Now a disclaimer: I have only seen at most the first episode of the each of those shows, so I cannot fairly judge the shows as a whole. Just that they were so offensive that I dropped them immediately, and this is coming from someone who does not shy away from fanservice shows, even controversial ones. Casual molestation is where I draw the line personally. |

I remember watching Dragonar Academy when it came out... I couldn't get past episode 3. It started out okay-ish, I only watched it for the dragons though, but man did it get horribly annoying quickly. In just 2 and half episodes it went from so-so to downright terrible.

I'm not much younger than you Ossan (I turn a quarter century next month), but I do like super long shows like your brother (not that most shows I watch are super long though). At the end of every season, we have to bid farewell to most of the shows that have aired. Now some we bid good riddance to like a leeching freeloader but others we mourn the loss of, sad we can longer make new memories with them. But the super long ones are by our side, season to season, year to year. Now some overstay their welcome or dilly dally getting to the end (see Naruto Shippuden), so this is a weakness too, but overall, we know week in, week out, they'll be there for a long time, at the same place every week, like a good old friend. Now to get less poetic, while don't know the mind of the reviewer, one series that comes to mind is the Monogatari franchise, though not everyone will agree that it is compelling. Then you don't know much, which is fine (seriously though no mention of head tilts?). Other examples I thought of, keeping in mind that ymmv, Shokugeki no Souma (Food Wars), High School DxD (though less so in this regard the third season, Born), and dare I say Cross Ange, controversial as its first episode is. Just me being jealous -> spoiler[Haha yeah, that Kara no Kyoukai collection (and shelf life galleries in general) intimidates the hell out of my own one-year old collection of odds and ends. Don't know if that collection will ever see the light.]
Anyway, I didn't care much for this One Piece filler arc, but Thriller Bark was pretty entertaining. The end of the arc was an especially emotionally-charged moment! |

Damn, that's one amazing KnK collection, it's making me friggin jealous, but at the same time it makes me feel much richer, ahaha. I bought the BDBOX too, but lol, ther're TWO BDBOXes in that collection xD, only that is around $1,000!!. Then the DVD collector editions which went around $100 each at the time in 2007 and beyond, plus the DVD of the epilogue which was kinda expensive too for what it had... (and was included as a Blu-ray in the BDBOX).
What's making me most envious though are the single CD limited editions, character songs, and above all, the key animation boxes  . And OH! THE NENDOS! I missed those when they went on sale... sigh.
And damn, I feel bad for you all that can't watch a series because "it's not good", I enjoy nearly any anime that gets thrown to me, unless it's a homungous tragedy (which I watch anyway) or one of those "masterpieces" which I can't even watch for more than 3 minutes without rolling my eyes (not talking about japanese animation here). Well, good luck finding whatever you can watch! But I must say that looks like an ordeal nowadays, hahaha! |

The brief filler arc after it though was not bad, not necessarily for quality reasons though. I believe the name is all you need to understand why I say that (Spa Island) |
