Life-Size Gundam Rises in Cup Noodles Commercial

1/1-scale robot joins Vagabond's Takahiko Inoue in instant ramen campaign

The life-size statue of the Mobile Suit Gundam's title robot appears (with some enhancements) in a 30-second television commercial for Nissin's Cup Noodles instant ramen. The commercial features the song "Number One Yarō!" by The CRO-MAGNONS (not to be confused with the former Hyouge Mono band cro-magnon). It began airing throughout Japan on Thursday.

A life-size Gundam statue once stood on Tokyo's artificial Odaiba island in 2009, but it moved to the central Japanese city of Shizuoka, the self-described "model capital of the world," last year. Shizuoka ended its display of the statue in March, shortly after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster.

The new ad continues in the spirit of the April Cup Noodles commercials in which cameras capture Takehiko Inoue drawing a giant mural of his Vagabond manga lead Musashi.
