M-2K announces near-sellout of BGC DVD set

posted on

In a press release yesterday, multimedia developer M-2K announced that the first pressing of the Bubblegum Crisis OAV series in a DVD boxed set had nearly sold out. Sales of the set have far outweighed expectations, with just the mail order distributor DVD Express alone having sold over 500 units to date.

"Bubblegum Crisis is our fastest selling title of all time," said Robert Woodhead, president of AnimEigo, who sub-let the series to the DVD developer. "I've never seen Bubblegum sell this fast on video or laser. We are stunned by the response!" Earlier, an AnimEigo rep was quoted as saying, "It's not a matter of 'if [we do more DVD titles],' but 'when.'" Most DVD retailers report extremely fast sales, and some report having the set on backorder. Meanwhile, due to fan demand, the release date for the new "DVD-style" packaging (as opposed to the software box-style currently being employed) has been moved up a month, to January 18. The upgrade price for existing owners has still not yet been determined.

M-2K is also considering the release of the Hurricane Live! music videos in a separate release. The Bubblegum Crisis sequals, Bubblegum Crash and AD Police Files, are also being considered, although Hurricane Live! looks to be an earlier release because M-2K has already obtained the necessary materials and rights from AnimEigo. Fans can give feedback on what they want next by sending e-mail to bgc_feedback (at m-2k.com).
