Before Green Gables Prequel Animation to Anne Novels Green-Lit

posted on by Egan Loo
No announcement yet on where the animation will be produced

The Japanese publisher Shinchosha has revealed that an animated project for Budge Wilson's Before Green Gables prequel to L. M. Montgomery's Anne children's novels was green-lit for production. No announcement has yet to be made about which country will host the animation's production. Before Green Gables (translated as Konnichiwa Anne by Akiko Usagawa) describes the early life of the Canadian orphan girl Anne, before she meets her adoptive family Matthew and Marilla in the first Anne novel, Anne of Green Gables (Akage no Anne).

The original Anne of Green Gables novel is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The story is best known in Japan through the official novel translations and a classic 1979 Nippon Animation television series directed by future Studio Ghibli founder Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Pom Poko). There is also a manga version by Yumiko Igarashi (Candy Candy). An earlier Canadian animated feature prequel named Anne: Journey to Green Gables was released in 2004, and a 2008 live-action Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning prequel television feature is in post-production.
