Shambhala Publications to Publish Book of Five Rings Graphic Novel

Sean Michael Wilson, Chie Kutsuwada adapt Miyamoto Musashi's book

North American religion and philosophy book publisher Shambhala Publications announced on Friday that the company will publish a graphic novel version of Miyamoto Musashi's The Book of Five Rings martial arts strategy text. Sean Michael Wilson (editor of Ax: Alternative Manga) is adapting William Scott Wilson's English translation of the original novel, and London-based Japanese artist Chie Kutsuwada (Hagakure: The Code of the Samurai, Manga Shakespeare: As You Like It) is handling the illustration.

Sean Michael Wilson and Kutsuwada previously adapted another samurai work into a graphic novel, Yamamoto Tsunetomo's Hagakure: The Code of the Samurai. The duo adapted William Scott Wison's English translation of the original book for that graphic novel as well.

The paperback version of The Book of Five Rings will retail for US$14.95 and the hardcover version will retail for US$18.95. The graphic novel will ship on November 13.

This new graphic novel is not the same as Variety Art Works' graphic novel version that JManga has published in English on its website.

Update: Description of The Book of Five Rings corrected. Thanks, Gilles Poitras.
