High School DxD New Sequel's Ad Streamed

posted on by Egan Loo
Supernatural school comedy's 2nd season begins with Excalibur story from light novels

A television commercial for High School DxD New, the second season of the High School DxD anime, began airing in Japan. The 30-second ad features the opening theme song "Sympathy" by Larval Stage Planning.

Issei Hyōdō, the dim-witted, lecherous main lead voiced by Yūki Kaji, narrates the ad. The sequel will begin with the Gekkō Kōtei no Excalibur (Excalibur of the Moonlit Campus) story from the third volume of Ichiei Ishibumi's original light novel series. The story centers around the shattered and reforged Excalibur swords that were stolen from the Vatican, including some that have been taken to Issei's town.

The main cast and staff are returning for the second season, which will premiere on July 7. Risa Taneda (From the New World's Saki, Oreshura's Kaoru, Say, "I Love You".'s Asami) joins the cast as the beautiful blue-haired sword fighter Xenovia dispatched by the Vatican. Maaya Uchida (Yuruyuri's Mari, Vividred Operation's Rei) plays Irina Shidō, the girl who joins Xenovia in the hunt for the stolen Excalibur swords. Haruka Yamazaki (Hayate the Combat Butler's Ruka, Vividred Operation's Mizuha) plays Aika Kiriyū.

The new season was announced with the 13th light novel volume, which shipped last September. The original light novel series follows what happens when Issei is killed by a girl on his first date ever. Issei is reincarnated as a devil, and from that day forward, he serves as an underling of Rias (Yōko Hikasa), a high-level devil who is also the prettiest girl on Issei's campus.

Tetsuya Yanagisawa directed the first season at the anime studio TNK with scriptwriter Takao Yoshioka and character designer Junji Gotō.

The first season premiered in Japan on last year, and Funimation licensed that season for North America for streaming and home video.
