Atto's slice-of-life comedy of countryside school gets home video release in 2014

North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks announced on Thursday that it has licensed the television anime adaptation of Atto's schoolgirl manga Non Non Biyori. The company plans to release the series on home video in 2014. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the series in various countries outside of Japan as it airs.

The slice-of-life comedy is set in a countryside school with only five students total, including four girls: Renge Miyauchi (played by Kotori Koiwai), Hotaru Ichijō (Rie Murakawa), Natsumi Koshigaya (Ayane Sakura), and Komari Koshigaya (Kana Asumi). On this isolated countryside, the nearest bookstore is 20 minutes away by bicycle, a certain "Ju_p" magazine comes out on Wednesdays instead of Mondays, and the video rental store is 10 stations away. Hotaru Ichijō transfers from Tokyo to this school and readjusts to the slow life in the country. Her fellow schoolmates are Natsumi, Komari, Renge, and Komari's big brother Suguru in the third year of middle school.

Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!, Girls und Panzer) is overseeing the series scripts, and Mai Otsuka (Oreshura, Shakugan no Shana III (Final), Astarotte no Omocha!) is the character designer and chief animation director. nano.RIPE is performing the opening theme song "Nanairo Biyori."

The anime premiered in Japan on October 7. Atto launched the manga in Media Factory's Monthly Comic Alive magazine in 2009, and Media Factory published the manga's sixth volume in September.
