Shinkai's 'your name.' Novel to Be Published in U.S. & 21 Other Countries

Kimi no Na wa. (your name.), Makoto Shinkai's original novel that inspired the film of the same name, is set to be sold in 22 countries and territories in Asia, North America, and Europe. The countries include:

Yen Press announced in October that it will publish the main novel next May, as well as Ranmaru Kotone's manga adaptation, and Arata Kanō's your name. Another Side:Earthbound spinoff novel.

The main novel is already on sale in Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, and other countries. In particular, the first printing in Thailand sold out nearly immediately, leading to more print runs. In Taiwan, the novel had an initial printing of 40,000, which is unusually high for translated novels.

The novel went on sale in Japan on June 18, before the film opened. The book has sold 1,009,000 copies in Japan as of October 16, and it topped Japan's bunko (trade paperback) chart for this year. All book tie-ins to the movie have sold 3.2 million copies worldwide. The novel is the 34th book in the history of the bunko book chart that has sold more than 1 million copies.

There is also Kimi no Na wa. AnotherSide: Earthbound, a spinoff novel focusing on supporting characters from the film. Arata Kanō wrote the novel; he has also written novelizations for Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days films, as well as a spinoff novel for 5 Centimeters Per Second. The film's character designer Masayoshi Tanaka drew the cover art, and Hiyori Asahikawa illustrated the novel.

A different your name. children's book tie-in features illustrations by Chiko. There is also a Shinkai Makoto Kantoku Sakuhin Kimi no Na wa. Kōshiki Visual Guide Book (Director Makoto Shinkai's your name. Official Visual Guide Book). The first volume of Ranmaru Kotone's manga adaptation of the film is available, and Kadokawa's Tokyo Walker magazine editing department published a Shinkai Makoto Walker guide book.

The film version has earned over 21.3 billion yen (about US$181 million) and sold 16.4 million tickets as the highest grossing film of 2016 in Japan.

The film held its world premiere on July 3 in Los Angeles during Anime Expo, and it is slated to open in 85 countries and regions.

Shinkai also wrote the script for the film. Masashi Ando (Spirited Away, When Marnie Was There, Paprika) served as the animation director and Masayoshi Tanaka (anohana, The Anthem of the Heart, Toradora!) designed the characters. CoMix Wave Inc. animated the film.
