29-Year-Old Mie Man Arrested for Distributing World Trigger, More Anime via BitTorrent

Police arrested a 29-year-old man under suspicion of violating Japan's copyright laws by using file-sharing software to illegally distribute anime. Osaka Prefectural Police arrested the company employee and Korean national living in Yokkaichi, Mie.
According to police, the suspect allegedly used BitTorrent to illegally distribute the World Trigger anime (seen right) last September. Police stated that the suspect said, "I wanted it to be seen by everyone and released it." Police also stated that the suspect used released Blu-ray Discs to upload the anime videos to his computer and distribute the files through BitTorrent.
The suspect allegedly illegally distributed about 30 popular anime and live-action television series titles. The damages related to copyright infringement in the case are reported to be 1.8 billion yen (about US$16.1 million). Police are continuing to investigate the details and damages related to the case.
