Additionally, he discusses the differences between American and Japanese anime fans, his recent book (The Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno: Tokyo Teen Fashion Subculture Handbook) and his outlook on the future of otaku in America.

An internationally recognized expert on Japanese pop culture, Macias' writing has been featured in both the United States and Japan in publications such as the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, the Bay Guardian, Chicago Sun-Times, Wired Magazine, Animerica and PULP. He is a correspondent for NHK World TV's Tokyo Eye program and the author of the books Tokyoscope: The Japanese Cult Film Companion, Cruising the Anime City: An Otaku Guide to Neo Tokyo and the Japanese-published Otaku in USA.
