Animerica was the most popular anime magazine in the U.S. in the 1990s. However, the magazine's popularity waned in the early 2000s when Newtype USA was introduced in the market.
In 2005, Viz Media canceled Animerica's monthly format and converted the magazine into two different formats: a convention edition and a quarterly digest edition (available at Borders, Waldenbooks and Best Buy). Both formats were free giveaways.
