With the news of the release from license hell of Hellsing Ultimate 1-4, I was wondering:
1) If there are any news on Tenchi's status, since it was in a similar situation as HU1-4 with the same companies involved. 2) If anyone has any information about Dominion Tank Police. I am not sure if this one is also in license limbo or if it is just considered a non-performing property and has gone off into the sunset. Thanks in advance for any information. |

Question #1 can be determined simply by looking at the Encyclopedia entries for the Tenchi series. If there aren't any recent news items linked to them, then there isn't any recent news.
Question #2 requires a little more explanation. The last news item we have on that one is an early 2006 note stating that Manga Entertainment had let its license expire. That means that it's probably stuck in unlicensed limbo - a shame, because it was an entertainingly frenetic title that was a staple of the late '90s/early 2000s American anime scene. |

To answer question 1, Funimation has licensing rights to most titles in the Tenchi franchise which include all three OAV sets, the two TV spinoffs (Universe and Tokyo), GXP, both seasons of Sasami's Mahou Shoujo Club and the movie trilogy. The most recent chapter of the franchise, Saint Knight's Tale, has yet to be licensed and the two mahou shoujo spinoffs with Sasami as Pretty Sammi were never license rescued by Funimation as Pioneer/ Geneon had them before their closure in 2007.
While Funi did pick up licensing rights to the older Tenchi titles last year, they have yet to announce when they are releasing them onto video. |

Actually, the original Dominion Tank Police OVA was licensed by CPM (US Manga Corps) in the US; Manga had the license for New Dominion Tank Police (just checked my copies of each). There is a link on the encyclopedia entry to a list published in an article on ANN of CPM licenses offered for sale by the liquidator. That seems to be the most recent news on the original. Doesn't really change the situation though; unless someone rescues them you'll need to go looking for a used copy on Amazon or Ebay. |

Yeah, thought they'd rescued that one, but were keeping it in limbo pending the OVA 3 "sales interest"-- Letting the future hang on one of the new cheap usurping in-name-only series wasn't the smartest idea, but then, this is Funi we're talking about, and how their comedy dubbing of Ayeka and Ryoko might emerge in the cable/CN era is still on probation after you-know-who. (Maybe if we told them how well Universe and Tokyo ran on the OLD Cartoon Network, it might gt them interested...That's all they hear anymore.  )
So, sort of like AnimEigo no longer offering Urusei Yatsura for disk, then, and no hope of RightStuf salvaging it?: Too expensive for a current US company to re-buy, too old for the Japanese distributor to care.

Read my earlier post regarding that question. Anything with Pretty Sammi wasn't license rescued and Saint Knights Tale remains unlicensed. |

Which is why I have been very slow to let go of my old dvd and vhs copies of shows. Many of my friends who were into anime in the 80's and early 90's dumped their old tapes. Now they sit there complaining about their stupidity while I sit pretty with my old dvd/vhs combo machine that works like a charm. Funny how so many of my old titles I grew up with have become very much the commodity in recent years. |

The one thing that I found odd about Pretty Sammy (the series, not the specials that were included on the Mihoshi Special DVD), was the fact that it was the only Tenchi spin-off that was released in the US as sub-only.
Would truely like to get that Saints Knight Tale thing is the US, really surprised Funimation did not jump all over it, since they had been obsessed with getting Tenchi stuff for years (or at least it seemed like it). BTW since it's technically part of certain Tenchi cannon now, dont suppose that Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure could get rescued? Or for that matter any other shows by AIC that need rescues (like El Hazard)? Yeah I know "when we have info we will let you know", just kinda curious. |

The Pretty Sammy OVA didn't sell so they made the tv series sub only, and I could find the second half of the Pretty Sammy tv series at Rightstuf earlier this year, so the Pretty Sammy tv series also did badly.
