When I saw Mai Hime I thought it was a pretty good anime, very original and it had a good story. The characters were very likeable and had a lot of depth.
But I recently read almost the entire manga of Mai Hime and I realized that the original story (the manga story) was so much better than the anime (even though the anime was awesome). I wonder why did they decide to divert so far from the manga story.
In the manga Tate plays a much more central role and is anything but useless, unlike in the anime yeah i know he defeats the obsidian lord at the end but he was useless all the way up to that point. In the manga at least he was essential for the himes to summon their children . Haruka is given hime powers to match her strong personality, and Mashiro too.
Does anybody agree or disagree with me?

The anime isn't "based" on the manga. They both started within a week or two of each other. They were never meant to be the same story, and they aren't. They've got the same characters and a handful of similar plot elements, and that's it.
The general consensus is that the anime is better than the manga, btw.
Post factchecking edit:
Manga:
Vintage:
2004-11-11
2005-07-07 (Final installment in Shonen Champion)
Anime:
Vintage: 2004-09-30 to 2005-03-31
Anime wins by a month and change.

Disagree. The anime and manga ran more or less concurently. If anything, the manga was based on the anime. I've always been under the impression that the anime was proposed first and later someone decided to make a manga to go with it. The stories, as I understand it, are completely different.
Otome is the same situation, but they decided to start serializing the manga before they started airing the anime. Again, they are completely different. In the manga, they change Mashiro into boy, amone other things.

Personally I found the Manga awful, way too cheesy. Interesting to note how some concepts from the manga such as Haruka's HiME element and the whole Princess competing system made it into Otome with some alterations.
Now the Otome manga, that is awsome beyond words and really deserves separate series.

I just checked the Encyclopedia and didn't see if the manga was going to be released here in the States.
Have you guys heard anything?
I've enjoyed the first DVD and am looking forward to seeing the rest of the series.
I really like the 3 main girls and the nutzoid school committee girl is hilarious.

Unlikely, its pretty short and falls flat in the comedy department and the drama is nowhere near the HiME anime. I guess it depends on how well the anime does, but I still find it unlikely.

It's unlikely, but I can see Tokyopop picking it up. They seem to like licensing inferior manga based on/related to popular anime (Cowboy Bebop, Scrapped Princess, Samurai Champloo, etc.)

I've seen episodes 3-6; and I've been loving every second of it. And I'm so happy that someone's picking up the manga. Although not "original" the characters are lovable; and the fight sequences are really cool.
