Somebody please keep Steven Foster away from future anime scripts.
I just finished watching Saiyuki, and it's just as bad as Orphen, Hoshi no Koe, Those Who Hunt Elves, Sin, and all the other dubs Foster's touched. -Sigh- You know the drill. Rewriting the script, screwing with tone of voice, adding new dialogue instead of keeping silence...it's all here. Yeah, the acting's fine, believable, blahblah, but my goodness, the script! Is it really so hard to translate? Is the original Japanese script so woefull inept that it's necessary to ADD dialogue? Or translate "Nyoi-sansetsu-bou" as "GRAAAAAAARRRR?" C'mon, man! You're not the one writing the show! I don't know why the guy feels the need to do this all the time. Maybe he just wants in on the creative process. But I can't stand the rewriting, and as much as I enjoy dubs, I'm done listening to Fosterized anime. -Jonathan |

oh no!! and I actaully liked the Saiyuki dubs!! though haven't seen all of it...so would it be better to just forego watching the dubbed and just watch the sub? because I was watching both...

The dub is okay, especially if you haven't watched/listened to the Japanese one. For the most part, it's like the Hoshi no Koe one: fine on its own but dreadful when compared to the original. In particular, the added dialog really torques me.
And that's where the problem lies. Foster creates a good product, but it's not the right one. -Jonathan |

I just hope ADV wasn't dumb enough to put him in charge of their new Slayers releases. I can just seen Dragon Slave being turned into Lina
muttering under her breath. 
In *some* instances it's not so bad, but he totally ruined Orphen, it didn't even make sence! However, until they get rid of him I'm just going to lay the blaim on ADV for not being able to get a clue and kick his ass out. Emerje |

The problem is that most of the people who watch ADV dubs don't particularly care. Sure, the dubs are incredibly off, but you don't hear too many complaints for ADV to really think about it too much. Hell, sometimes the bad dub is better. Take Colorful for example. The English dialogue had nothing to do with the original Japanese script, but it was hilarious. It's a little disappointing that Foster takes so many liberties with his script, but if people can swallow it, he may as well keep pumping it out.
Until people really start to heavy-handedly whine about it, I don't think Foster's going anywhere anytime soon. |

Orphen, I heard, got a terrible treatment - Foster re-wrote everything so much that major plot points were altered. That's bad.
But, I don't really see too much of the harm in making the characters go "GRAAAR!" in a campy, worthless show like Saiyuki. |

I only have one friend IRL who actively watches this series, and he openly admits that the excessive E.Monsoon-esque swearing (in a dub no less!) is half of the reason he has stuck with it. |

Foster's direction is good. But his script alterations are bothersome. It's the swearing that usually bothers me. I don't really have a problem with vulgarity, but the problem is that when Foster uses it, it's jarring.

Yeah, adding some cursing in Voices of a Distant Star was just bizarre. Mikako swearing was totally out of character. |

Who around here has seen Steel Angel Kurumi dubbed? I'd like to know whether or not Foster screwed up on this title.

Actually no. Karinka is a foul mouthed little robot chick in her original tongue. Steven Foster is known to tone down profanity as well though. Biggest example. The "Kei" episode in Excel Saga. CM |

Foster's a pretty good director imho. He should just leave the script alone.
He does a good job getting a good performance out of the actors and what not. But the script editing, geeeez, why does ADV keep letting him do that? Particularly with all the complaining. What's more, they seem to be in denial of it, it's a subject they refuse to discuss. |

He still screwed with it that it changed the characters a bit more than they should have... O_O He toned down on Kurumi a little bit later on in the series, but the first few episodes were so badly done that they wound up changing the episode titles in the English dub. Even if he keeps Karinka in character, that doesn't fix the rest of the alterations... |

I rather liked the Kurumi dub, after all, what conveys what differs culturally. I watched the dubs and subs, even the dub with the sub on and I did not feel slighted.

Oh, I can't disagree too much there. It was still amusing to watch, which suggests that he can still direct fairly well. But in the end, it felt like a different production. But let's face it, because of how he's done things in the past, some of the dub advocates in the industry itself would rather kill him as much as look at him. The voice actors/actresses I've spoken with who have worked with him are also not too fond of the man a couple of whom I speak with on a regular basis. In one respect, it's kind of nice to have an insider's comments, especially from a professional point of view. And in that respect, how good of a director are you if you can't at least get some positive comments from the actors you work with?
Just a thought. |
