I'm wondering, since there are two hundred and thirty three pages worth of threads in the anime forum, if some of the threads get automatically deleted if there isn't enough space to hold them all? I thought I saw that there was two hundred and thirty four pages sometime back, but I could have been wrong. I do know for a fact that some of the threads get deleted for reasons I don't need to mention, I've been on this forum long enough to know that.

I don't know if it's just me, but pages 232 and 233 don't seem to have anything on them.

phpBB does have an auto-pruning system, but I can't imagine that a website like this would need to delete old topics to save space. I'm sure the encyclopedia and other content take up a lot more server room than the forum does.

If they want to save space, they should delete all of the locked threads, especially those that have less than 5 posts on them or are "duplicate topic" threads.

An explanation was given here and there in the past. I asked them if it takes up bandwidth or anything like that, but they told me it doesn't. Oh, well...

It doesn't have a lot to do with bandwith, just size, and even this really isn't much. I'd imagine each forum page is only about 10kb to 50kb at the max. And I doubt ANN is concerned about the space issue too much as it encourages users to upload avatars rather than have them hosted offsite.

I remember that there was a big forum reorganization / downtime shortly after I started posting here, and when they brought them back, the admins said that they were able to preserve the database of old posts. So, it seems like the ancient threads are safe for now, for all the noobs to necropost on the hottest news of 2003

phpBB forums:
37 table(s), 12,544,235 entries, 449.3 MB
ANN's other tables:
125 table(s), 5,757,155 entries, 560.9 MB
So all in all, phpBB is responsible for almost 50% of the site's database usage...
We don't have any pruning of old posts/topics set up, and don't particularly need to either. We actually have several duplicate and development copies of most of the databases, so the "live" data is only about a quarter of the total DB space...
