I believe the license of Peach Girl led me to think about this. Could we market something like Peach Girl this towards all teenagers and not just anime fans? I mean they Americanized Sailor Moon and they were able to appeal to more than just fans of shoujo anime. I was just thinking that if they were to Americanize the names in Peach Girl, add some young celebrity voices they could really pull it off by showing it on MTV or The N. I know it'll probably never happen but I believe shows such as Boys Be and Super Gals with some effort could really appeal to a more mainstream audience.

What are your thoughts and what other titles could probably work?

I am not so shure that making Anime more Mainstream is a good thing, i mean really do you want MTV to start playing anime? The more people interested in it the lees it becomes about the fans and more about profit. Do you really want to see more shows like naruto comming out over here, just to sell crappy merchandise?

Very true...if you put anime on the mainstream you put it under a magnifying glass...and if you aren't careful it will catch on fire...and turn into a smuldering heap of ash. If it ever does go mainstream you would have to take a slow approach...right now anime is still considered "oh that cartoon porn" or at least according to my parents. Rolling Eyes

I am just suggesting because I know some people just don't feel comfortable with watching something that feels foreign, like alot of my teenage friends aren't really open to anime and I was just thinking something like Peach Girl's would really appeal to them but for them to feel comfortable while watching it could be slightly altered to their familiararity. I honestly would have no problem with making anime more mainstream. I am a big shoujo anime fan and alot of my friends even female friends just don't feel comfortable even though the overall message and plot points really reflect our teenage culture. So it would be interesting to bring anime fans and the more general audeince together. Ofcourse I'd like the overall story and quality to be kept.

I can understand the fear anime fans would have though with trying to mainstream the genre. It could cost the fans the quality of their favorite series.

Well....there was this girl in school who asked me what I was drawing and I answered "anime" and she said "Isn't it that weird violent and dirty cartoons that come from Asia", I corrected her and said it came from Japan. Very Happy

EDIT: I wouldn't say I fear it per se, just that I think America needs time to adjust to it a bit more. Course there is that 1 in 1 million chance if they did put it mainstream it would do well.

Thats a bit surprising...I thought maybe it was when Haruko was in the towel on top of Naota or something with more cleavage.

I don't believe we can acutally force anime to become mainstream. Seeing as how it's popularity has grown over the years, hopefully someday it will become "mainstream".

With that said, I don't realy see a difference in the production of anime if it does become mainstream in America. Maybe US distributors will try to flood the market with titles, but that's about it. Nothing bad with that is there?

Oh and to the comment about just crap getting liscenced, crap anime is out there believe it or not. If it becomes "mainstream" doesn't mean crap will be the only thing available. Just like American mainstream movies. Sure a lot of them are repetitive crap, but there are a few gems. Which is also how I feel about anime. There is a lot of it, but only some appeals to me, which may not appeal to you.....

I really hate talking about "what ifs" considering we won't actually know what will happen until it does. There is just no possible way to tell the future or exactly predict how it'll turn out.

I'm neutral on the celebrity voices issue and take it on a case by case basis. But I've never liked Americanization of names, and it seems like insulting dumbing down to me. If we can grasp the linguistics of complex fantasy and sci-fi worlds, we can handle the original Japanese names.

I think that day has already come. MTV ran Heat Guy J a few years back, didn't it? Very Happy

In all seriousness though - regarding the original question, for anime aside from children-oriented phenomena like Pokemon and Yugioh (and from some comments I've read here over the years I understand that the Americanized version of Yugioh was a bit watered down) to become more mainstream I think it would have to lose it's stigma of consisting only of fanservice and ultraviolence.

Well, it's one thing I always say, you can cure ignorance, but you can't cure stupidity.

But anyway, I think there should be some kind of awareness of what anime is, but I really hope that it doesn't become popular in the broadest sense at all because then the media conglomerates are going to get all over it and not only bastardize the art form, but warp it into something that sells some kind of product or some 'lifestyle', kind of what happened to rock music in the 80s, and hip hop in the 90s.
