I live in a bible belt town in the middle of nowhere so getting Anime is a 30 minute drive for me. Now it is a labor of Love so I don't mind. BUt everybody around me are oblivious to what Anime really is. Things that really irritate me are stuff like
"Oh, you mean them CARTOONS."
"Like pokemon and stuff."

And there is a guy at work who saw 1 anime in his life (or should I say hentai) so when I mention Anime. he goes "Anime porn, anime porn." He's real idiot. BUt that is another missconception that bugs me. people think anime must have adult content. What are you thoughts?

I'd just tell him that since he says "anime porn", it means that there must be anime that is NOT porn.

Since he doesn't say "oh, you mean that porn?" You can show him a flaw in his perspective.

Since you live in the boonies (by your own admission) people are not informed as to what anime is. So, when you tell someone that you're into anime and they respond " Like Pokemon?" don't be upset. Most people are just trying to understand, but they need some reference frame to measure what you're saying. Unfortunately, Pokemon is the one anime that absolutely everyone has heard of and knows something about, so it's only natural that this is where everyone's mind naturally turns. Next time you run across this remark just smile and say "Yes, but there is alot of great anime other than Pokemon." This way the person will go away thinking they have comprehended something, but also realizing that they are uniformed.

To say all anime is hentai is the same as saying all films are porn.I can relate to you, though.I usually have to order online or travel to the nearest gamestop(30 miles away) or to suncoast(50 miles away).Another problem is I must travel to get ANYTHING released in the last 5 years to rent.

I have the same problem, but, instead of saying "Like Pokemon?" they'll go "Oh, that gay stuff you like" grrr... what really ticks me off on the porn thing is the fact that at my (crappy) Sam Goody, they have the anime right next to the porn

At least they save you the trouble of walking to the opposite of the aisle for your live action porn fix. Laughing

Back on topic, most of the misconceptions I get is that Anime is porn or that it's all like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. I usually refer them to Spirited Away and the fact that it's an anime that won an Oscar.

I never bother correcting these misconceptions more than once. I point their mistakes once, but never more than that. If they want to stay stupid, let them stay stupid.

But one thing that really pisses me off: My little sister watches the dubbed version of Yu-gi-oh! on Kids WB. So everytime a buy a manga, or everytime I'm watching an anime, my mother comes in, with a smile on her face, and says: "Oh, you're watching Yu-gi-oh! again". She has done that with GRave of the fireflies and Cobwoy Bebop among others, it drives me crazy.

I think your mom is just having fun teasing you. My mom used to do the same thing except she used to sat "those cartoons" Course I knew she was just giving me a hard time about it since it was like about every other week I had a shipment of Fansubs coming in.

I live out in the sticks too, and I get that kind of thing a lot. My only problem with trying to politely to correct these misconceptions is that most people really just don't care. In general everyone where I live are country folk and they have country lives, most people don't have computers let alone the internet, and that suits them just fine. They're just looking to find that next load of hay for cheap, or to borrow someone's bushhog. The people around my age are only concerned with making their trucks taller and louder, where the next field party with the 6 kegs is gonna be, and...strangely enough...when the new rap CD is coming out o_0. I gave up trying to inform anyone around here a long time ago, the few people I've gotten interested in anime have been friends that have come to my house and see me watching it and they chill for a minute and start asking me about it, a few of them have become big fans too. I wouldn't sweat it too hard.

And just as a triumphant little story, I went to a cousins wedding a few years back, took my PS, FFVIII and Wild Arms, as well as Grave of the Fireflies and the Evangelion series (had just gotten it). She's about four years older than me (I was 19 at the time), but she thought she was "all growd up" as she was getting married and all. She came into my room at her pops house, saw me watching the first episode of Eva, looked at the playstation and gave me a weird look, "So...you brought your Nintendo (heh), and you're watching cartoons? Aren't you a little old for that?" I just smiled and told her that I didn't want my inner child to be bored.

Anyway, she kept bugging me about the anime, telling everyone at dinner that I was "still watching cartoons" and what not. Both my parents stayed out of it, because I'd been through it with them before and they knew the skinny (and respect it more now). So finally, I got her, her fiance, my uncle and aunt, told them to give me two hours, and put Grave of the Fireflies in the DVD player. My moms n' pops both left. "Aren't you going to watch the cartoons too?" was what my cousin asked with a wry little smirk. Mom n' dad both shook their heads and my mom kinda got a sad look on her face, "I can't watch that again..." and left. So when it was all said and done there was nary a dry eye in the place (even my cousin's fiancee couldn't hold it back all the way). They all told me it was one of the better movies they've seen, though they didn't care to see it again (understandable). My cousin has since become a closet anime fan. She stops by my apartment from time to time to borrow a few DVD's. It's her guilty pleasure, I guess.

So, when all else fails, show 'em Grave of the Fireflies. Sorry this was so long Wink

I'll try that.Only about 3 people around me like anime(one used to but he got crushed by mdgeist).I let one of them borrow my old lupin tape last thursday.I can relate to living in the country, though.Almost all people live on farms, have accents,
and try to have a bigger truck than everyone else(including my brother).

My parents were pretty dubious about the anime thing, but I duped them into coming to see Princess Mononoke when it was in theatres. By the end of the movie Mom was crying (so was I) and Dad was fascinated. They never razzed me about anime after that.

I heartily support and applaud that some of you have shown Grave of the Fireflies to those who know little about anime as a starter. It is usually a revelation to them that the animated format CAN be used to tell serious stories and drama. That said, I would easily recommend other Studio Ghibli titles as well - Kiki's Delivery Service or My Neighbor Totoro are also great starters for those who know little about anime and deride as "kids stuff".

Sadly, this perception will persist since so few seem to know of the great anime titles, and often start others on inappropriate material (hentai, violent anime, etc etc - though some are good). Any Ghibli Title is a great starter for those who belittle anime as kids' stuff...
