if anyone who is reading this happens to have any knowledge or authority in the manga world, please give me some clues as to whats going on here.

i was found X/1999 manga online on some website thats in russian or some language that i'm not familiar with. well, it had all 18 volumes for download. but i noticed that there was a 19th volume at the bottom of the page.

i downloaded the 5 chapters of the allegged 19th volume that they had available and looked at all of the pictures since the text was in some sort of russian or something. well, as far as i can tell, they take place after volume 18 of the manga.

i'm thinking that surely this must be a fake, because if CLAMP was working on the 19th volume, it would have been pretty big news and i would have heard of it already.

i know its probably against the rules of the forum, but i think this is an important issue, so here is the link to the website where i found the manga.

[EDIT: Do NOT link to scanlations! Read Rule #10. -TK]

I don't keep up with X/1999 info as I've never read it. I'm interested, but I don't want to start something that could well never finish.

I believe those chapters are real. While 19 has not been published (not enough material), I believe CLAMP did make a few chapters beyond what was in the last published volume before the series was put on indefinite hiatus.

X/1999 was cancelled after the 18th volume due to some misunderstandigs and CLAMP announced at that time that story would be finished someday but they didn't mention it precisely when. As it is, they might not have enough material for a 19th volume, but what you might have found would be some chapters that couldn't be released in a volume. Who knows?!

Now, I have purchased only the 18 volumes and I don't have any idea whether CLAMP will release a 19th volume anytime soon (which is really annoying Rolling Eyes )

Well that is interesting. I just started reading the the series (Only the first volume so far), and it looks like it has some promise to me. Then again any CLAMP title does.

Volume 18 was published in April 2005. I went and checked my copy...I actually thought that it had been much longer than a year and a half Confused

I asked this same question some time ago and dormcat gave me a link to the Sekigahara (?) incident, which was about a child murdering other children and then there was the Kobe earthquake where friends/acquaintances of CLAMP had died. Which is some of the reasons why CLAMP have not finished the series. Of course, damned if I can find that thread now. Rolling Eyes Embarassed

Edited for spelling because I'm anal. Laughing

yeah, it was because of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, and the Sakakibara incedent. X/1999 has a lot of earthquakes and beheadings in it, and it kinda hit close to home for readers, so they put it on hiatus

Hey, I too have that copy (the one released in April, 2005) Laughing I thought that I wouldn't find too many fans of this manga. Wink It is more popular as an anime series. And now I'm wondering what keeps CLAMP from releasing the 19th volume. I knew too about those incidents but at the same time since it has passed quite some time now (nearly two years), I would have expected them to release the 19th volume by the now.

Still it is a manga that is worth purchasing even without a clear ending to it. (we might guide ourselves with the ending of the anime series Wink Rolling Eyes )

Thanks for the insight regarding the reason for the indefinite hiatus. So in other words, it's a similar situation to when the releases of movies regarding terrorism were put on hold for a while here in the U.S. after 9/11.

So, that being said, would fans who have seen and read both advise watching the series instead of reading the manga? I'm kind of interested as I have recently finished reading Tokyo Babylon, which I loved, but either sounds like a rather large investment, especially since it seems to be one of the lower ranked Clamp works on this site, which surprises me since it sounds quite good...

i'd reccomend both reading the manga and watching the series.
i really cant compare the two. i started off by watching the series, and fell in love with it (its still my favorite anime). for one thing, the music is awesome, secondly, its full of great characters and cool action scenes, as well as a great story. also, the dub has really good voice actors which i feel suit the characters very well (crispin freeman as fuma, tony oliver as sorata) *warning* if you watch the series first, do NOT watch the movie, because it sucks in comparison. the only good thing about it was the song Forever Love by X Japan playing for the ending credits.
so then i bought all 18 volumes of the manga. and it is greatness. the style of the art is amazing. and there is MUCH more detail. about half way through the series, the manga starts being more different, so its like a different story
i cant compare the two, i really like both of them.

Like yyhkingsburg said STAY AWAY FROM THE MOVIE! Visually it's wonderful but absolutely does not do any justice to the story at all.

X TV & X/1999 Manga is definitely an investment. But, I would have to say get both. The TV series is just incredible in the animation and the voice acting. Both the Japanese and English casts were incredible. The manga, well, it fills in more of the backgrounds of the various characters. Yes, it is not finished and, at this time, will not be finished, but read it as far as you can. You will not go wrong.

No, I'm not. First, of course I know the location of my own article, especially if it was a feature one. Second, if I couldn't remember the exact location of my own post within 300K+ posts, I ego-search. To find out our conversation, I entered "CLAMP" and "Sakakibara" and specified "Search for all terms", with author "dormcat", and voilà!

I would definetly read the manga, because there are many insights of the story that don't appear in the anime and it's a shame to lose all that. Plus the fact that there are some characters which don't appear in the anime.

I would also definetly recommend the anime. There's geat artwork and the story is definetly told in a more appealing light (at least for some). Nonetheless, I would stay away from the movie, just like the others recommended. Wink
