Reading the "Why do you watch anime?" and "Hard being an older anime fan" threads has given rise to a new curiosity for me. Whenever I'm watching anime with others (can be one or a few) one of two things typically happens.

1. We watch the first few minutes of whatever show and then start ignoring the anime to talk about unrelated topics.

2. We shut up and watch the show, keeping discussion to a minimum.

In the first instance anime watching serves as little more than background noise. In the second instance anime watching becomes the focus but it's not really all that different than just watching it by yourself. So, I typically just watch it by myself as I seem to get more out of if that way. What about the rest of y'all? Do you just watch it alone or do you try to make a point of watching it with others? When you do watch it with others do you focus on the anime or do you find that you often need to go back and watch it again to get the clues and other bits you missed the first time?

I usally just watch it alone really, I mean for me it isn't like I know alot of people who like anime anyways. If I do watch it with my friends it does tend to turn into little more then background noise since all but four don't even like anime. I did watch Rozen Maiden with my mother (the only anime she likes do to her love of Victorian dolls) and for the most part there was little conversation. I personally tend to enjoy watching anime alone for the same reasons as you, I just get more out of the series, I catch more details, and can really get into the mood of the show.

That would entirely depend on which friends I watch with lol. I can easily get more done simply by myself. While that is fine and dandy I find myself wanting to talk about the series most times with someone and get their take on it. Throw ideas back and forth basically. I usually watch my anime with my gf now so I can do that. Granted I just got her really "into" it 2 years ago so her tastes are still maturing. There's some genres she doesn't like, and for those I watch alone. Otherwise I try and include her when I watch anime. With jumbled schedules it does cut down the quantity I could watch in half but I consider it worth it being able to watch them with her.

Now, if I'm watching with my other friends, except 1(he's quiet), I gotta re-watch stuff. We always find something funny that someone says and laugh about it. We get side tracked easily and miss small things that might be said or occur in a series. The only genres they really like are comedy, science fiction, and fast paced action series (especially martial arts). These are not usually genres you gotta pay as much attention to as say a drama or thriller. So while I might miss some stuff it's normally only small tidbits and not that crucial. We did make so many boob and sex jokes while watch Desert Punk I had to re-watch the whole series heh. That's still fun though. While not something I wanna do all the time it's nice to just laugh a lot and make silly jokes and conversation.

To answer the thread question anime can be a social activity for me, which is nice. Sometimes I wanna just veg out and enjoy it by myself, but majority of the time I like watching it with others so I have people I can talk about the show. with

When I watch a show with a friend, the main focus is usually the show itself, although we oftentimes do crack comments to one another. Actually, come to think of it, it depends a lot on the genre of the show. If it's a very serious show where atmosphere is important, we are likely not to make many comments to one another. However, if we're watching a comedy, then we'll probably add on to the humor with our own remarks. I believe sociality is linked to laughter, so I'm more likely to be social when watching something lighthearted, or something so bad that it's funny. If it's something serious, I'd probably shut up.

The only person I watch anime with is my sister and generally we don't talk a lot while watching, unless it's something we seen a couple of times, then it sometimes turns into a running commentary about which scene is the best or if a paticular plot turn was hinted at earlier. Most of the time, we just sit and watch in silence, enjoying the show. I usually watch any series once by myself before I try showing it to her since there are some types of content she doesn't really like.

So, basically, it depends on if the anime is something we haven't seen before and if it's something that might have certain types of content. (Clearly my sister is not going to like UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie as much as I might.)

Both of us are the types who generally don't like to talk while watching a series though.

I'm actually planning to show this one to my mother too, as she's a doll collector. I have to wait for the Geneon release though. My mother's not the type who watches subtitled things usually. I showed her Kakurenbo a little while back and she liked it okay. (Horror isn't really her favorite genre though.)

I watch anime in a group, with my roommate, and by myself and each has it's own pros and cons. Anime club is interesting because I watch series that I would not otherwise and, even if I don't care for them, it is nice to be exposed to new things. However, discussion often can make the anime background noise to an extent...though in some cases, snarking at bad anime has been really fun.

Watching with my roommate is my preference, because we can discuss the show as it unfolds without bothering others and we also have similar tastes. This also allows us to talk about the series afterwards, however sometimes it is hard to find time when both of us can watch together so it can be hard to get through series.

I find I watch the majority of anime alone, which has the advantage that I can concentrate on it and watch whenever I have time. However if I want to talk about a series, I often have to explain it first, which can get tiresome.

Naw, through fansubbing, anime watching is merely a solo-activity. As for anime conventions, different story. Wink Gotta love a good party. Twisted Evil

while i do intend to see what an anime club is like in college when i graduate form highschool of course. i rarely watch anime as a social activity.

i watch with my brother and sister in law sometimes, i knew they enjoyed it except i enjoyed it far more Razz im trying to open them up to some good titles once they come out in box sets for the us.

as for friends and groups, i dont have many friends who watch anime and only 1 who is actually cool to watch with. most of my other friends make fun of it such as when we were watching ninja scroll the movie and in the spoiler[beginning it shows Kagerou being raped] while my friends were saying the typical ignorant anime fan stuff like eww hentai and crap which is to be exspected and always like to watch only action series :/.
as for the one friend i stated earlier, he was quite cool, I've shown him almost my entire collection of anime and he's become a major fan himself which feels good to introduce someone to my world as its great to have friends who enjoy the same hobby. we laf about dumstuff and make alot of inside jokes which when other friends come over as well they are like what? lol and spend weekends just watching series while eatin pizza which are good times as not everyone wants to go out all the time. its especially fun to go at nite to wal mart when nobodys around and look at the few animes they have there haha im pretty sure u guys dont know what im talking about but yeah thats what we do for a social activity

anime is far more enjoyable alone (opinion) as I can fully adjust to the atmosphere, catch every little detail, enjoy the storyline almost like im in that world itself without worldly interference, laf to my hearts content with nobody there to look at me wierd Razz and of course feel the mood of when a heartbreaking scene happens. there is just a better understanding this way. although i wish i felt as comfortable with anime as with watching it with others but its fine.

side note- as i was looking up how to spell Kagerou from ninja scroll, i noticed a movie 2 is in production?! frikken sweet Smile i did love the first movie however the series was very disapointing and i thought a movie called ninja ressurection which i thought to be a sequel to the original movie but was tricked by rumors and bought it, learned my lesson never buy anything unless u have information from a reliable source

Most of the time I watch by myself except when I'm at an anime club meeting or with my family . My father has an interest in anime (he's the one who introduced me to it) but lately very few shows have caught his attention. Right now he's watching Ergo Proxy with me but that's all he has the time or interest for. When we watch we're usually quiet and focused on the show but afterwards we tend to discuss it a little. I try to get my mother to watch with me but I very rarely succeed. Strangely enough the only show she'll watch with me now is Reideen (2007). We don't get a lot of watching done though as we spend most of the episodes laughing at stupid things like how long it takes Reideen to ready one of his weapons or all the awkard moments between characters (they have the slowest reactions to everything).

How you holding up after getting banned from A4? Razz

Anyways, I pretty much always watch anime by myself. Mainly because when I watch fansubbed material their really isn't much room for anybody to watch it with me. When it's titles I have purchased, once again, it's by myself because pretty much all of my friends have no interest in anime. It's fun watching anime at a convention, though the fangirls were screaming to much when I ended up watching Ouran. If I had friends who watched anime I wouldn't mind watching it with them, but I get too distracted and would miss a lot of details in the anime.

Another thing -- anime comes in series. While episodes are short with about 20-30 minutes each, put 'em all together and yer talking about 3-4 hours. Maybe 5? Having gone to my college's anime club some years ago, they tend to just run a series one episode after another. It was how I managed to sit through Fushigi Yuugi. Laughing

It's a lot lot more convenient to watch anime on one's own anyways.

Yeah, I'm one who usually watches it by myself. At times when the arcade was still open at my school, they would show anime and sometimes I'd be watching it, but most of the time I would just be playing games. At times I've watched anime at home with my brother and sister. My brother watched the first episode of Elfen Lied and then after that I don't know how he's been faring on anime. He loves Lupin though. I usually watch shows that are kid friendly with my sister, Fruits Basket, Trouble Chocolate, and Adventures of the Mini-Goddesses. If my whole family watches anime, it's only Spirited Away because that's practically the only thing my mom will watch.

I'm the Lone Ranger in my house as well. My dad doesn't hear as well as he used to so watching programs can be interesting at times. Rolling Eyes My mother, well, my mother pretty much can't stand anything that I watch and I can't stand her rape/murder/disease-of-the-week movies.

Besides, I talk at the screen sometimes. Usually telling a character that they are an idiot and I know that annoys people...Just try talking at a character in a movie theater and see what happens... Embarassed

I pretty much watch anime by myself since I don't really have many friends and the few I have aren't into it. Plus I prefer to watch it alone so I can focus on it more. I don't mind watching anime with others though, its just there is no one to watch with and I prefer to watch alone. A few years ago when one of my friends was into anime we enjoyed watching Case Closed and trying to solve it before Conan.

To me it really depends.

I have a few friends who like to watch anime, we all watch what we want on our own, but when one of us finds one we feel is really good, we all watch it together. We call it "anime night" we just stay up all night and watch the whole series all the way through, provided it isn't over 26 episodes, that's the max. Often it's more enjoyable as a group because of the immediate discussions and a general fun game in action anime is to guess which characters will live or die, we've all developed a pretty good sense for it over the years. lol

As a group can be a lot of fun for obvious reasons, for example our last "anime night" was for the anime When they Cry-Higurashi and in the first episode we were litterally yelling at the screen spoiler[when the main character started getting paranoid about his friends, we were right with him yelling "Take that bat everywhere with you!!!" the whole way lol]

Either can be good in their own ways, but with a group, it's key to have people you actually respect and enjoy hanging with, otherwise it can take away from the anime itself.
