I got the Bandai boxed edition several years ago, but I'm glad to see Funimation putting out a quality release for those that missed out or want to discover this show.

Actually I have seen very unflattering images about this release: shrink wrapping that is bending the product, backwards slipcover, superior disc art in the regular edition.

I am certainly glad that Funimation rescued this great movie, but I will be satisfied with the cheaper regular edition.

I bought the collector's edition and I can confirm issues with the slipcover. It's not a major issue by any means, but it makes it a little bit more annoying to get the blu-ray case and included booklet back into the slip cover. I don't regret getting it though at all.

I have no clue what the regular edition disc art looks like though to compare. I see no issues with the disc art in the collector's edition though.

Standard edition is also available!

Standard edition, you say? But this film is available for £4.99 from Amazon UK! (Even less than that for the standard DVD!) For once, the bargains lie in our territory.

Anybody here watch their copy yet? I have heard from a couple of friends that the audio is all sorts of messed up. Generally really low dialogue volume, so that they needed to almost max out the volume in order to hear everything. This wouldn't be the first Funimation release to have issues like this either. My Eva 3.33 release being another one.

The discs look fine, and they even shine instead of having the color-coded crap FUNi has been using on most releases for almost 4 years (Ex: http://i.imgur.com/ms8xWnl.jpg They unfortunately do the right more than the left (That's a Geneon disc I know, but they used to do disc art like that all the time), really makes their releases less appealing). The problem is they used the exact same image as the cover three times in a row, while the RE which got posted earlier has a different image each time. Even the Bandai DVD LE did better in many ways. What FUNi did on the CE just comes across as horribly lazy by comparison.

Oh and as I brought up in that Fandom Post thread recently here, there's now another problem, this time with the booklet. I swear all the issues this release has... I still intend to buy it, but hopefully many of these problems save for the disc art (which can't be changed at this point) get fixed by then unless FUNi has already printed every copy they intend to sell, and won't do any sort of replacement program.

The LE is an LE...

I doubt Funimation will reprint it. If the disc has a problem, they might fix that in a later print-run or offer a disc-replacement program. I doubt they will do anything about the cover art issues and mangled booklets.

I already have the Bandai boxed DVD edition of GWLTT but wanted to get a copy of the film on Blu ray seeing as I missed the Bandai Blu ray and that was a very print run that disappeared and skyrocketed in the new and used market when Bandai closed its US home video division. I also happen to think Hosada is the most consistent feature anime director in the industry now that Satoshi Kon has passed away and Hayao Miyazaki retired so I definitely a high-def release of his first film now.

As far as on-disc content goes, a lot of the Funimation release seems to have the same extras as the previous Bandai release. I do think the Bandai boxed DVD edition did better as far as artwork presentation and getting a REALLY good extra item that wasn't replicated in any other domestic release of this film -- the soundtrack CD.

I don't care to pay $10-$20 more for an LE where the only significant difference from the standard release is a stupid booklet I'll look at maybe once or twice in a lifetime.

I've been through this before with the additional $10-$20 that used to be charged for the series chipboard boxes that were released with Volume 1 or the final volume DVD of a TV series release on DVD. This was during the anime home video market at its peak and just before the collapse in 2007!

Funi has to offer something better than this on LE releases.

It's ridiculous that I could find the standard edition -- with the SAME discs as the LE release; the disc is the most important thing -- $20 cheaper than the LE release -- at Wal-Mart.

Yeah, I went to Wal-Mart this past week which I normally don't do (since they don't normally stock a lot of great anime and only carry what they think will sell well) and found much better deals on The Boy and The Beast AND The Girl Who Leapt Through Time -- both of which were $20 for at least this past week. Even the usual online outlets I check weren't as good price-wise and the best I was able to find in-store elsewhere was $25 for The Boy and The Beast and $30 for the standard edition GWLTT... I did see the LE of GWLTT but the store that had it (FYE) was charging $40 which is ridiculous for a booklet. I've bought other Funi releases with booklets that were limited print runs (RE: Cyborg 009) that were still standard edition price.

I bought my Collectors edition copy of GWLTT from Rightstuff during a sale. It was only 5 dollars more that the regular ed during the sale. I have not received my copy yet because I have other items preordered that have not released yet. I won't be getting my GWLTT shipped to me until around the middle of next month. I hope my copy is not all jacked up. A little dent is no big deal to me. But I have seen some pics that otehrs people have posted and they look to be in bad condition. If what some people are saying is true and the sound quality is not up to par, then that will be a big problem to me. I hope that Rightstuff or Funimation will offer replacements to all the people who have messed up pacakges and or messed up discs. Since I am having to wait to get my copy, I also hope that it won't be too late to return it if I need to.

I have the standard edition. Watched it and saw no problems with the video or audio.

I have Japanese LE version which I bought several years ago and this is what it looks like:

Basically Bandai USA copied Japanese LE version as much as they're allowed and that's cool. As for booklet and bonus videos included in this Funimation edition, US fans are finally getting what Japanese (hardcore) fans have been enjoying for years.

I think slipcase for Funimation LE edition is kinda tacky though.

Depending on who is editing the booklet, it could be a junk or a treasure. For information-hungry fans, any behind-the-scene feature is a treasure. As for myself, I always favored interview and commentary over usual character profile and plot synopsis part in booklets.

Thank you. This might be worth getting after all.
