I'm thinking about buying the Viz/SJA publication of Death Note.
Is it censored? if so how heavily?

I've read the scans before reading the manga and I can't remember any edits. Can't say the same about many other Viz SJ(A) publications though...

Zero.
95% of the series is dialogue. There are a couple of gunfights, but I wouldn't deem them violent enough to the point of any editing.
The only questionable scene is A government agent named Halle Lidner who takes a shower and they obscure her breasts with some steam. That's about it, not sure if it was the same in the original publication or not. That woman and Takada are about the only ones with any kind of sex appeal to their designs. I guess you could interpret some very vague hints at fanservice, but the story is so engrossing, you probably won't care at that point.

Thanks. I like to buy things I've downloaded scanlations of, but am put off by the SJ/Viz brand manga's edits.
Would you buy now or wait to see what the "Library binding" edition is like?

You can't? Viz is way too scissor happy and edits way too much (about 10x more than any of the others that have ever edited), but the vast majority of their titles are unedited.

Same thing was done in the original publication, you got to remember, this is modern day Shonen Jump we're talking about here, they wouldn't want anything "improper" in their magazine.

Maybe I didn't use the right words, but I meant to say that DN wasn't edited as far as I know, but that I have found edits in other SJ(A) series.

Interestingly enough, Death Note always has the "Some text and art has been modified from the original blah blah blah" message on the credits page.
Though this isn't a pure indicator as to whether or not Viz had edited a title. They've given that message to titles that they've never touched, while some that have been edited don't have it.
Inconsistency? You bet'cha.

They could be refering to some of the text written in the death note that were replaced with the English translation.

Yeah, that message refers to anything being changed, including text (which we obviously wanted changed so we can read it). It's not an inconsistency at all since I believe Viz is putting that on all their titles now.
