It's sad what happened to this franchise. The games did very well with hardcore gamers, but the franchise itself - especially the English adaptation of the anime (which was poorly handled) - wasn't really commercially viable. It came at an awkward time, right before the release of both Pokémon Sun & Moon and Pokémon GO. So, it unfortunately never really built the kind of western fanbase it could have gotten.
How Disney handled the anime, by airing it on Disney XD - which I might add isn't as well-known as Disney Channel and Disney Junior (hence why DuckTales moved to the former) - and making a lot of 4Kids style edits, pretty much killed any chance of it succeeding as well. Hasbro also poorly marketed the toys.
In other words, I think it's all thanks to Disney and Hasbro that Yo-kai Watch was such a disaster in the US.
