Watching the trailer I am reminded a bit of the film titled Small Soldiers directed by Joe Dante that I saw years ago as a child (as well as the review of the movie a couple of years ago by Nostalgic Critic) This is the first I am learning of this franchise, and I am a bit curious (at least in terms of the anime show).

It seems misleading and cruel to the fans that the studio has been hyping it up all year as a sequel only to suddenly backtrack and reveal it as a compliation film. A compilation film is not a sequel in any way.

MAL initially had it listed as a TV sequel series, based on the first announcement. My guess is the producers thought they'd have enough funding for a sequel, but that turned out not to be the case. Should have played it safer with the press releases, because this looks bad now and it didn't have to.
